FIT Women: Panthers Rout Lions to Earn No. 3 Seed in SSC Tourney

(Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (10-6, 2-2 SSC) cruised to a 13-3 victory over Saint Leo (3-12, 0-4 SSC) Saturday en route to clinching the No. 3 seed in next week’s Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Sara Grenier scored her 100th career goal in the victory and paced the Panthers with three goals and one assist. Jordan Grant notched a hat trick and Allie Modica and Caroline Dunleavy recorded two goals and one assist apiece. Allie Wood finished with a team-high four ground balls and one caused turnover, while Brittney Embree and Haley Heggblodcaused two turnovers each. In goal, Stephanie Stuart (10-6) made 13 saves while facing 24 total shots. Grenier opened the scoring with an unassisted goal five minutes into the ball game. Grant then tallied consecutive goals over a span of 39 seconds to give FIT a 3-0 lead with 18:46 remaining in the half. Abbie Ross fed Jennifer Doyle to cut SLU’s deficit to two beforeLeah Dunn answered with her first goal of the game to increase the margin back to three. Consecutive tallies by Grenier completed her hat trick and extended the Panthers’ advantage to 6-1 at the 11:35 mark. Ross scored to make it a four-goal game before Dunleavy fed Modica with 37 seconds left to get the margin to 7-2 at halftime. Florida Tech recorded a pair of three-goal runs in the second half to balloon its lead to 10 goals prior to the final whistle. The Panthers finished with one more shot in the game (25-24) while the Lions collected more ground balls (23-19) and draw controls (12-6). Ross paced SLU with two points on a goal and one assist. Doyle and Fraser each scored once in the game. Allie Sheftall notched a game-high five ground balls to go along with four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Rebecca Halley (3-12) made just four saves in the loss. The Panthers will now prepare for their SSC Semifinal matchup against No. 2 seed Rollins on Friday, Apr. 29 at 3 p.m. ET at Bryant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida. The 4th-ranked Tars defeated FIT 14-10 in the teams’ earlier meeting this season in Melbourne.
