FIT Women: Upset-Minded Panthers Host 13th-Ranked Golden Lions on Sunday

(Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (6-1) will try to pull the rug out from under another ranked opponent this week when it hosts No. 13 Dowling (4-1) on Sunday at noon ET. The upset-minded Panthers knocked off No. 6 New Haven 11-10 in overtime on Monday to garner the second-year program’s first ever victory over a Top 20 foe. They then followed it up with a 16-5 thrashing of Indianapolis on Wednesday. Allie Modica was the hero in Florida Tech’s upset of the Chargers recording four goals and one assist, including the game-tying goal and game winner with 36 seconds remaining in the first overtime. She leads the Panthers with eight points over the last two games. Sarah Kapinos is just behind with seven points, most coming in her break-out performance against U Indy in which the freshman recorded six points on five goals and one assist. Caroline Dunleavey tallied four goals and two assists in the two games while Sara Grenier has four goals. The Panthers have been impressive on defense as well over the stretch recording 23 caused turnovers. Brittney Embree andArielle Gunderson lead the charge with five caused turnovers each while Haley Heggblod has contributed four of her own in the two games. Florida Tech will need to up to the task again Sunday if it wants to improve to 2-0 against ranked opponents this season. Dowling has won two straight since falling to New Haven 15-14 on March 9. The Golden Lions’ most recent victory was a 16-13 result over Southern Connecticut on Tuesday. Karie Znaniecki and Katie Meinecke scored four goals apiece in the win. Alyssa Milano added a hat trick and one assist and Allie Merrill scored two goals to go along with three assists. Meinecke paces the Golden Lions with 16 goals and is tied with Brooke Kreuscher for the team-lead with 21 points apiece. Meinecke also tops DC with 20 draw controls while Emma Ferreira is tied for second with 10 to go along with her 14 goals this season. Erin Smith also boasts 10 draw controls and leads the team with 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Lauren Young has started all five games in goal for Dowling, earning a 4-1 record while allowing 9.79 goals per game and making 31 total saves. J.C.
