FIVE FLORIDA SOUTHERN WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYERS NAMED IWLCA DIVISION II ALL-AMERICA SELECTIONS

Above – Gabrielle Barowski was one of five Mocs to receive All American honors – photo courtesy of FSCMocs.com GRAND LAKES, Colo. – When the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association (IWLCA) announced the 2014 Division II All-Americans on Friday, five Florida Southern players were honored with First, Second and Third Team recognition. Senior Katie Hammerer and junior Megan Asper were named First Team All-Americans, while Caitlin Chase was named a Second Team All-American, andGabrielle Barowski and Lorianne Hoover received Third Team recognition. This is Hammerer’s second consecutive First Team selection, while Asper, Chase, Barowski and Hoover received their first All-American honors. A total of 48 Division-II women’s lacrosse players, from 17 different institutions, were honored with All-American honors by the IWLCA for the 2014 season. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on June 7, 2014 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa. Originally from California, Md., Hammerer was named a First Team All-American for the second time after ranking 36th in the country with 125 saves and 17th with a goals against average of 8.92 – both program and personal bests – while helping Florida Southern to a 16-2 record and the cusp of the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. Last season’s C. Markland Kelly Division II Goalie of the Year made a season-high 15 saves in an overtime victory over Stonehill on March 15 and stopped 14 shots in the team’s season-opening win over Saint Bonaventure on February 24. Hammerer also tallied 28 groundballs and caused seven turnovers in 18 appearances for the Mocs this past season, helping her earn First Team All-Independent and All-South Region honors. A junior from Parkton, Md., Asper led Florida Southern with a program-record 62 goals while placing second with 78 points and third with 16 assists on the season, ranking 12th in goals, 15th in goals per game (3.44), and 27th in points. In 2014, the midfielder became the first Florida Southern lacrosse player – male or female – to score 100 goals in a career, with her 100th goal coming with 0.6 seconds remaining in a dramatic 16-15 comeback victory over Indiana (Pa.) on March 18, and scored a career-high seven goals in a 15-9 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on April 4. Asper also led the team in draw controls (76), groundballs (55), and caused turnovers (25), leading the junior captain to being named the 2014 Independent Player of the Year and earning First Team All-Independent and All-South Region honors. Originally from Mt. Laurel, N.J., Chase led the team with 68 assists and 111 points while placing third on the team in goals with 43. Chase ranked third in Division II in assists and fourth in total points, while also ranking 69th in goals scored in 2014. The attacker became the second women lacrosse player in Florida Southern history to cross the 100-goal mark with her first goal against Shorter on April 18, and tallied a season-high five goals against Fort Lewis on March 24, recorded six assists four times throughout the season and tallied 10 points against Gannon on March 4 and again against Fort Lewis. In addition, the First Team All-Independent and All-South Region attacker picked up 27 ground balls, caused 10 turnovers and claimed five draw controls. In her second season at Florida Southern, the Alexandria, Va.-native Barowski was a force in the defensive end for the Mocs. Appearing in 14 games, the sophomore was third on the team in caused turnovers (23) and 27th in the country in caused turnovers per game (1.64), while also scooping up 30 groundballs and coming down with nine draw controls. In addition, the First Team All-Independent and Second Team All-South Region defender contributed on offense with eight points off six goals and two assists. A junior from Annapolis, Md., Hoover scored 48 goals and dished out 21 assists to place second on the team in both categories while coming in third with 69 points. The midfielder captain scored a personal-best six goals in a 12-11 victory over Queens (N.C.) on March 28. Hoover also became the third Moccasin women’s player to score 100 goals in a career against Shepherd on April 19. The midfielder, who earned First Team All-Independent and Second Team All-South Region honors, also won 45 draw controls, picked up 43 groundballs and caused 22 turnovers.
