Eight different players scored goals as Fleming Island bounced back from its only loss of the season with a 13-3 thumping of visiting Bartram Trail Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles were determined to get the taste of Friday’s 21-5 defeat at the hands of IMG Academy out of their mouths, and started fast against the Bears. On offense, the Golden Eagles used isolation sets and two-man pick plays to exploit the Bears’ man-to-man defense. Patrick Schreiber, Devan Marquis, Sam Barrington and Hayden La Vangie each drove past or around their assigned men to stake the Golden Eagles to a 4-0 first quarter lead. The quartet scored two goals apiece, as did sophomore middie Jack Hawley.
“That kind of balance is what we have been working towards,” said Fleming Island coach Jeff La Vangie.
On defense, another foursome—this one comprised of seniors Chase Wilson, Jaren Szafranski, Aiden deAbreu-Reese and Josh Calloway— shut Bartram Trail out in the first half, pressuring the Bears into 20 turnovers and allowing only one shot on goaltender Ryan Kelly. Kelly finished with seven saves, for a sterling .700 save percentage.
“It was the most complete game we’ve played this year, from start to finish,” said La Vangie.
Hawley guided a shot under Bartram Trail goalie Kellen Harp’s right armpit from the left side to send the hosts to the intermission leading 8-0. By the time sophomore attack Hunter Goyette drove from behind the goal and dished to teammate Gavin Parr for Bartram Trail’s first goal with 6:21 remaining in the game, the Golden Eagles had scored three more times and turned what was anticipated to be a tight game into a laugher. Juniors Alex Testa and Kyle Retamar added late goals for the Bears.
“They’re good,” said Bartram Trail coach John Jackowiak. “They completely outworked us.”
Bartram Trail, now 6-3, returns home to entertain Palm Coast Matanzas Friday night.
Fleming Island improves to 7-1 and hosts Jacksonville Bolles in a critical District game Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
