Sophomore Jack Hawley scored five goals to lead Fleming Island to a 15-1 victory over visiting Flagler Palm Coast in the season opener for both teams Tuesday night.
Hawley scored three consecutive goals to give the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead with 7:24 remaining in the first quarter. Fleming Island never looked back, extending their advantage to 12-1 at halftime.
Fleming Island senior Hayden LaVangie opened the season in style, driving in from the right wing and flicking a shot inside the far post from behind his back two minutes into the contest. The Jacksonville University commitment finished with three goals and three assists.
Junior Devan Marquis also notched three goals for Fleming Island, while Sam Barrington, Danny Schreiber, Patrick Schreiber and Andy Zima also found the net for the hosts. Thanks to Ben Cannon, who won 10 of 12 faceoffs, the Golden Eagles dominated possession and outshot the Bulldogs 44-7.
Fleming Island head coach Jeff LaVangie was pleased with his squad’s quick start. “We wanted to go out and execute,” said LaVangie. “As a coach, it’s a great thing to see your team take care of business.”
Goalie Carter Kusck stood tall in the face of constant pressure for Flagler Palm Coast, saving 19 shots on goal. Senior attack Christopher Forte tallied the Bulldogs’ lone score, taking a pass in front of the net and zipping a quick shot past Fleming Island’s Ryan Kelly.
