FLN Weekly High School Media Poll (Well, This Writer Anyhow!) – 3/1/15

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
The third week is behind us and until Friday there was really not a lot of action that would affect the polls . . . But Friday and Saturday come along just like every other day and some results certainly made an impact. Up north, a rising program nearly took down a heavyweight. And Martin County stumbled twice to fall out of the Top 20 while Columbus Catholic returns to the lineup.  The Orlando area continues to impress and now Tampa has a right to crow.     This Week’s Top 20   #1 – St. Thomas Aquinas #2 – Ponte Vedra #3 – Lake Highland Prep #4 – Barron Collier #5 – Lake Mary #6 – Jupiter #7 – Stoneman Douglas #8 – Boca Raton #9 – Vero Beach #10 – Saint Andrew’s #11 – Seminole #12 – Jensen Beach #13 – Maclay #14 – Benjamin #15 – Columbus Catholic #16 – Oxbridge #17 – Lake Brantley #18 – Fleming Island #19 – Newsome #20 – Buchholz   Also considered:  Gulliver Prep, Bishop Moore, Tampa Jesuit, Cypress Bay, Martin County, Saint Augustine, Oak Hall, Bishop Verot Each of the ‘considered’ needs something to make their way into the Top 20.  For most of them it comes down to quality of schedule.  For example, I am hoping to see Cypress Bay soon and they are 9-0 but the schedule is basically local since the District ‘leadership’ decided to require home and away games with each team, leaving them to not be able to schedule a lot of out of district quality.  They do get University, Spanish River, Belen and Pine Crest later on so they can make their own case.  It’s similar for so many others.  I put Newsome in the poll but their schedule pretty much caps them until we see what happens if they make a run in the playoffs.  Teams need to understand that a great record does not get you full consideration, it’s the entire body of work that does and if I get to see you in person it gives me a far better feel for how good you are then the LaxPower power rankings do. Seminole is knocking on the door of the Top 10 with 2 losses because of how good those losses are.  It’s a good lesson to everyone.  Schedule tough, play those tough teams competitively and get rewarded.  A late season winning streak is more important than a quick start in weighing my opinion.  Look at Jupiter last year.  Clearly the top team in the state in the first half of the season but finished 8th in the final poll because of when they lost. This season is really heating up but this week there are not too many games between Top 20 teams.  Basically Vero-Jensen Beach, Jupiter-Saint Andrew’s and Ponte Vedra-Lake Mary.  So not too many chances to make a big move unless upsets happen above. Next week will likely look very similar . . . but that’s why we play the games! We’ll get back to analyzing the various slots next week, but a few items to note: I jumped Ponte Vedra and Lake Highland above Barron Collier solely due to quality wins; BC gets their chance the next couple of weeks to jump back up.  Saint Andrew’s might well go higher since they passed my visual test but can they be consistent going forward? Newsome and Buchholz make their first appearances.  Buchholz is certainly worth paying attention to and their showdown with Oak Hall in a few weeks should be a doozy.  (Do they still use that word?) By the way, didn’t get any Monty Python-style suggestions last week . . . please think of one I can spin into a top 20 article . . . “We are the knights that say . . . ” Someone must have something!   And in addition to mentioning her on my podcast with Wells this week: A special Thank You to Daisy Jacobs for meeting the Vichyssoise challenge!   Have a great week everyone and remember to get out to a game this week!  Hope some of you watched and enjoyed the live stream of the SA-Benjamin game!
