FLN Weekly High School Media Poll (Well, This Writer Anyhow!) – 3/5/16

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
As I mentioned last week . . . Florida teams need to reserve their places!   Laxpalooza Florida 2016   Another week in the books and some more surprises to roil up the ratings, but not really that much in Top 10 . . . SA – jupiter only made Jupiter move up, not down . . . Lake Brantley did take down Lake Mary on Friday so that changes things A lot more movement in the second 10 as Newsome, Gulliver Prep and American Heritage-Plantation all fell to unranked teams. A favorite for unluckiest team emerges Another favorite continues on its’ path to their first winning record ever A Broward program doubles their win total all time in one week And some teams looking to crack the Top 20 suffer from tough losses   A new sponsor this week:   https://youtu.be/tl6YOYdBiQ4 We’ll never forget . . . RIP Carole, we still think of you   Last week’s Top 20 #1 – Saint Andrew’s – showed their heart with the come from behind OT win over Jupiter #2 –  St. Thomas Aquinas – dominant week #3 – Ponte Vedra – big road wins, Jupiter in town Thursday! #4 – Lake Highland – non-FHSAA schedule this week, SA comes calling Friday #5 – Vero Beach – continues to roll #6 –  Jupiter – If they won Thursday would I have vaulted them to #1? #7 – Lake Mary – falls to Lake Brantley, ouch! #8 – Benjamin – haven’t gotten over the hump against the higher ranked teams #9 – Oxbridge – three easy wins, Jupiter on Tuesday #10 – Maclay – Oak Hall at home on Tuesday #11 – H.B. Plant – Berkeley Prep trap game on Tuesday #12 – Nease – played well against Ponte Vedra, barely held on against Fleming Island #13 – Lake Brantley – nice win over Lake Mary #14 – Oak Hall – keeping it together . . . the schedule starts for real this week #15 –Belen Jesuit – still winning . . . again.  Handled Columbus Catholic at home #16 – Gulliver Prep – home loss to Stoneman really hurts #17 – Newsome – the thump of the week.  Not the same as last year #18 – American Heritage-Plantation – Friday upset drops them out #19 – Winter Park – Seminole loss drops them out, can get redemption Tuesday versus Lake Mary #20 – Bishop Moore – two tough losses drops them back   Also considered:   Bolles – off last week Buchholz – Matanzas loss drops them out, gets Nease next Creekside – great week moves them up Gulf Coast – Barron Collier thumping exposes their weak schedule ODA-Sarasota – couldn’t win the rematch at home with Cardinal Mooney Pine Crest – same time, next year Stoneman Douglas – road win over Gulliver gets them back in   We are now halfway through the season . . . Hard to believe   https://youtu.be/LjidBIynRok A Monkees Song . . . top that Quint.   Some of the games that had an impact this week:   Tuesday St. Thomas goes on the road and pulls away from American Heritage-Plantation 12-5.  AH-P earns respect from me and Coach Crowley for that performance Creekside nips Fleming Island Jupiter over Jensen Beach Vero manhandles Martin County Ponte Vedra over Nease Belen Jesuit beats Columbus Catholic in a rematch of last year’s District upset West Orange 12 – Montverde 10 That last one is there to set a marker for next year . . . Montverde is getting serious about lacrosse   Wednesday Barron Collier clobbers Gulf Coast Seminole takes down Winter Park West Boca defeats St. Edward’s   Thursday Pine Crest continues to roll and American Heritage-Boca continues to sink Berkeley Prep gets back into consideration by beating Cardinal Mooney easily SA 8 – Jupiter 7 in OT – game of the year   Friday Cardinal Gibbons gets back into consideration with their upset of American Heritage-Plantation Matanzas gets into Top 20 consideration by beating Buchholz Creekside over Bishop Moore Stoneman nips Gulliver Prep in OT on the road Lake Brantley upsets Lake Mary Nease nips Fleming Island     Some Interesting Storylines   District 26
    W L
1 Saint Andrew’s 4 0
2 West Boca Raton 1 1
3 American Heritage/Boca 1 3
4 Boca Raton 1 2
5 Saint John Paul II 2 1
6 Spanish River 0 2
What do I make of this?  American Heritage-Boca, once a Top 20 team in danger of missing their District playoff?  Saint John Paul II defeated Boca Raton this week.  All of a sudden Boca is in trouble too.  SJP goes to SA this week so figure the West Boca matchup decides if they go 2-3 or 3-2.  West Boca has already played SA.  AH-B goes to Spanish River and must win. This will be fun to watch   What Could Have Been   Fleming Island is 4-5. Their district might be the best in Florida this year . . . Ponte Vedra, Creekside and Nease . . . this week they play Bartram Trail for the final spot in the District playoffs. Talk about pressure. Their 5 losses? Okay, PV beat them easily Maclay?  3 goal loss on a neutral field 1 goal road loss to Buchholz 2 goal road loss to Creekside 1 goal road loss to Nease Best 5 loss team in the state . . . And the move to District 6 only happened this year.   What Is Going On With Lake Highland Prep?   They are now 4-5 after getting handled easily by Lovett (Ga.) With a tough comeback win over Benjamin that they could easily have lost and a 2-goal win over a Lake Mary team they easily beat in the Final Four. A few more goals and they could be 2-7 right now. And SA, Jupiter, Boys’ Latin and McDonogh are coming up. Could this team finish under .500??  All four of those games are home or neutral site. A record of 7-9 is not out of the equation. And that would be the biggest upset of the season.   Immokalee They are now 7-4 with 7 games left. I’m rooting for you to get that first winning record!   And now time for:   Underdog   The Underdog Upset Of The Week!   Plantation 10 – South Plantation 9 Not that this is a huge upset, because when they played last year South Plantation swept the two games by a combined 4 goals. But entering their third season Plantation had a combined 1-16 record.  A victory this year over an awful Pines Charter (2 goals scored all year in 6 games) and last year’s upset of Immokalee were the only two wins, until this week’s big win.  Congrats to them! A runner up this week is Suncoast Riviera’s upset of Park Vista 14-13 in OT, avenging last year’s 17-5 hammering by Park Vista. Congrats to Suncoast!   The Upcoming Week Big games coming up!   Tuesday Immokalee hosts Gulf Coast . . . what a win that would be for them! Canterbury Ft. Myers hosts Bishop Verot . . . keeping an eye on Canterbury Lake Highland hosts Seminole in a MUST WIN . . . can’t believe I’m even writing this Jensen Beach hosts Vero Beach . . . Vero’s first big test Maclay hosts Oak Hall . . . Maclay barely hangs on Saturday to beat Tampa Jesuit Nease hosts Buchholz Oxbridge hosts Jupiter Spanish River hosts American Heritage-Boca . . . AH-B must win Stoneman hosts Cardinal Gibbons I didn’t even mention SA hosting SJP II . . . it’s been a long time since this one wasn’t on the radar for me   That’s a pretty full day . . .   Wednesday – none   Thursday Boone hosts Timber Creek Hagerty hosts Lake Brantley Pine Crest hosts Ransom Everglades Spanish River hosts West Boca . . . could be do or die for West Boca in the rematch of last year’s War For Four   Friday Berkeley Prep hosts HB Plant Fleming Island hosts Oak Hall LHP hosts SA Nease hosts Creekside Ponte Vedra hosts Jupiter St. Thomas hosts Gulliver Prep Tampa Jesuit hosts Bishop Moore   Saturday Lake Mary hosts SA Nease hosts Jupiter Maclay hosts Creekside   Not bad.   And now a little interlude   Casey always tells me Mikey was the best . . . but not in this video!   And before the new Top 20, we have a new drum roll:       This Week’s Top 20!   #1 – Saint Andrew’s #2 –  St. Thomas Aquinas #3 – Ponte Vedra #4 – Jupiter #5 – Vero Beach #6 – Lake Highland #7 – Lake Brantley #8 – Benjamin #9 – Oxbridge #10 – Lake Mary #11 – Maclay #12 – H.B. Plant #13 – Nease #14 – Oak Hall #15 –Belen Jesuit #16 –  Creekside #17 –  Stoneman Douglas #18 –  Gulliver Prep #19 – Pine Crest #20 – Bishop Moore   Also considered:   American Heritage-Plantation Berkeley Prep Bolles Buchholz Cardinal Gibbons Creekside Matanzas Newsome Tampa Jesuit   Remember, take a friend to a game!   And one last bonus video, since we didn’t get any humor in this week: From the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast . . . I guarantee you this show would have been pretty controversial today . . . And yes kids, that was Ronald Reagan, BEFORE he became President Reagan, participating in these roasts, and being roasted himself . . .   https://youtu.be/TscYlals5KY
