FLN Weekly High School Media Poll (Well, This Writer Anyhow!) – 3/8/15

We are now into the final half of the season and the few big games last week did shake things up some as Saint Andrew’s made the biggest leap in the Top 10 and the rest of it just kind of fell into place as some teams continue to put up solid wins against very good opposition and some are in the middle of soft patches in their schedules. We had some movement in the bottom half too but things settled nicely last week.
This coming week will see a number of top teams playing Top 20 opponents and potential movement as we get the following games:
Tuesday
Jensen Beach hosting Boca Raton
Oxbridge hosting Stoneman Douglas
Ponte Vedra hosting Bolles
St. Thomas Aquinas hosting Benjamin
Vero Beach hosting Martin County
Thursday
Lake Mary hosting Lake Brantley
Saint Andrew’s hosting Boca Raton
Friday
Jupiter hosting Ponte Vedra
Maclay hosting Nease
St. Thomas Aquinas hosting Barron Collier
Saturday
Gulliver Prep hosting Ponte Vedra
Pope John Paul hosting Vero Beach
That’s a lot of big games . . . and we start to separate the contenders from the pretenders.
When we look back at the week the biggest result was Saint Andrew’s big road win over Jupiter 13-12 on Saturday. A close second is Ponte Vedra’s nice home win over Lake Mary. But the rest of the week was fairly quiet as some of the top teams played IMG, which does not figure into my calculations and because I will strive to be consistent all year long on this stance I will not give Jupiter extra consideration for being the school that finally garnered the victory over them.
So, here we go . . . (still waiting for SOMEONE to give me a Monty Python opening line . . .)
This Week’s Top 20
#1 – St. Thomas Aquinas
#2 – Ponte Vedra
#3 – Lake Highland Prep
#4 – Barron Collier
#5 – Stoneman Douglas
#6 – Saint Andrew’s
#7 – Jupiter
#8 – Lake Mary
#9 – Boca Raton
#10 – Vero Beach
#11 – Seminole
#12 – Jensen Beach
#13 – Maclay
#14 – Benjamin
#15 – Oxbridge
#16 – Newsome
#17 – Lake Brantley
#18 – Buchholz
#19 – Martin County
#20 – Cypress Bay
Also considered: Columbus Catholic, Gulliver Prep, Bishop Moore, Tampa Jesuit, Nease, Saint Augustine, Oak Hall, Bishop Verot, Fleming Island
As you can see, Columbus Catholic’s loss to STA did hurt based on the margin of difference and Fleming island’s upset loss to Bolles has them on the outside looking in, while Martin County crept back in with their convincing district win over South Fork while Cypress Bay went to 12-0 on the season with the OT win over Archbishop McCarthy.
There are some other teams I am also keeping an eye on, both because they have excellent schedules against lesser competition but also teams that started really slow but are coming on very strong now like Pine Crest so expect to see more volatility next week!
For those who show even the slightest interest, my perspective schedule next week:
Monday – Calvary Christian hosting Miami Country Day
Tuesday – a tough one but I think Oxbridge hosting Stoneman is the biggest one, just above STA-Benjamin
Wednesday is an off day
Thursday will be the huge rivalry game between SA and Boca Raton
Friday I get to see Hobart homeboy Trent Carter as STA hosts Barron Collier
Saturday will be Gulliver Prep hosting Ponte Vedra, and then on to the Cruzan Amphitheater for the Steve Miller Band and Journey as I continue to celebrate my 70’s and 80’s roots!
If I can get to that many games then each of you can go to a game too! Keep going out, the kids need the support!
