The win – the third in a row for the Florida Southern after starting the season 0-2 – puts the Mocs overall record at 3-2 on the season, while the visiting Hawks drop to 2-4 with today’s loss. The 28 FSC goals shatters the record of 21 originally set against Young Harris in the 2013 regular season finale, when the Mocs took down the Mountain Lions 21-5 on April 19. A number of records were set or tied against the Hawks today. It was an offensive explosion for the Moccasins as 14 different players tallied at least one point, while 12 different Mocs scored at least once. The 42 FSC points off 28 goals and 14 assists smashed the previous school record in total points in a game of 25, also set against Young Harris last season. The 14 assists in today’s game also tied the school record previously set against Young Harris. It wouldn’t take long for Florida Southern to find the back of the net as freshman Tyler Kuhlman (Wellington, Fla.) scored the game’s first goal at 13:33. Freshman Cody Dyer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) connected with freshman Grant VanOverbeke (Rosemount, Min.) at 7:01 to put the Mocs up 2-0. Junior Dane Sorensen (Victoria, British Columbia), fresh off his five-goal first quarter performance against No. 10 Lake Erie on Wednesday, put himself on the stat sheet with a goal off a pass from sophomore Kyle McLaughlin (Woolwich Township, N.J.) before recording three straight assists on two goals from VanOverbeke and one from Dyer to end the first quarter with the Moccasins up 6-0. Shorter, competing in their first season as members of the NCAA, finally got on the board with a goal at 13:47 before VanOverbeke responded with his fourth goal of the contest to put the Mocs back up by six. Shorter answered right back with an extra-man goal at 9:53 to put the score at 7-2, but Florida Southern scored the next four goals off the sticks of sophomore Matt Boutin (Leonardtown, Md.), senior Shane Tompkins (Bear, Del.) and Sorensen to go up 11-2. Back-to-back goals by Shorter’s Tyler Kristiansen mid-way through the quarter drew the Hawks to within seven, but Moccasin goals by freshmanAndrew Fisher (Monkford, Md.), senior Chris Murphy (Camillus, N.Y.) and Dyer ended the half with the Mocs cruising 14-4. The visiting Hawks opened the second half with a goal at 13:47, but that would be the only goal Shorter would score until late in the fourth quarter, as Florida Southern squashed any chances of a miraculous comeback. Boutin completed the hat-trick for the first Moccasin goal of the half as head coachMarty Ward began the process of replacing his starters. Senior Kevin Naslonski (East Setauket, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season at 10:57, and while multiple players tallied their second, third, fourth and even fifth goals of the contest to close the third quarter with the Moccasins comfortably ahead, 23-5. The fourth quarter is where a swath of young Moccasins would earn their first career points. Freshmen Zeke Wilson (Manhasset, N.Y.) and A.J. Carter(Naples, Fla.) scored the first goals of the fourth quarter while junior Brendan Mykle-Winkler (Langley, British Columbia) scored his first goal of the season on an extra-man opportunity before Shorter finally scored with 4:45 remaining in the game. Junior Brett Carlson (Chilliwack, British Columbia) and Dyer score the final goals of the game with over five minutes to play before Florida Southern ran out the clock. With five goals and five assists on the day, Sorensen set a new record for points in a single game with 10, besting the previous record of eight last set by Cam Holding against Rollins on February 13, 2010. Dyer tallied a season-high seven points off five goals and two assists in the win, while VanOverbeke scored four goals and dished out three assists for six points. FSC dominated in every major statistical category. The Moccasins outshot Shorter 58-16, just seven shots away from tying the record of 65 made against Young Harris. The Mocs also picked up 46 ground balls on the afternoon, 21 more than the Hawks. Senior Dan Krispinsky (Fort Myers, Fla.) went 8-16 from the face-off circle, while senior Nick Meyer (Ocean Township, N.J.) went 11-13 and freshmanBlake Weil (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 7-10. The trio combined to set a program record for face-offs won with 26. Freshman Matt Lalli (New Milford, Conn.) earned his third win of the season with four saves in just under 40 minutes of action before being relieved by sophomore Logan Muether(Hilliard, Ohio), freshman Austin Suarez (Fort Myers, Fla.), sophomore Daniel Rivas (Baldwin, N.Y.) and senior Pete Lowrey (Tampa, Fla.). Matt Kristiansen led the Hawks with three goals on the day, while brother Tyler was next with two and Andrew King with one. Zachery Dirkse and Kyle VanKauwenberg tallied the lone assists for Shorter. JR Willers recorded eight saves in three quarters of action before being relieved by Tanner Short in the final 15 minutes of the contest. Short recorded three saves against five goals in the fourth quarter. Florida Southern continues their non-conference schedule with a home game on Thursday, Mar. 13, against Belmont Abbey (2-4) at 7 p.m. The Crusaders took the last meeting between these two teams in 2013, a 7-6 Deep South Conference contest played at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Fla.
