LAKELAND – The No. 6 Florida Southern women’s lacrosse earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA National Championship Tournament and will travel to St. Charles, Mo., for a rematch with Lindenwood (Mo.) on Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m.
“I am really happy for the senior class. This is something that they’ve wanted for four years,” said head coach Kara Reber. “I’m really glad that they have the opportunity to play in the Elite Eight.”
“It was unbelievable,” said senior captain Caitlin Chase. “After all of the hard work that we’ve put in all season and all of the blood, sweat and tears, it was great to know that we made it into the NCAA Championship Tournament and that all of our hard work paid off.
“We’re all super excited to get in the tournament for the first time in school history,” said senior captain Lorianne Hoover. “We’re all on board and I think we are going to be really successful because we are all on the same page.”
The Moccasins (19-3) earned the third seed in the South Region following a program-best 19-win season. They led the Sunshine State Conference with 11 All-SSC selections. Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Hoover (Annapolis, Md.) and fellow senior captain Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.) earned First-Team All-SSC along with juniors Gabby Barowski (Alexandria, Va.) and Rachael Griffith (Ellicott City, Md.) Redshirt freshman goaltender Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.) was named the league’s co-Freshman of the Year in addition to her first-team honors.
The first-round game will be a rematch of the contest at Lindenwood’s Harlen C. Hunter Stadium in March. The Lions – the No. 3 team in the latest Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll and the second seed in the South Region – won that game, 9-8, scoring the game-winning goal with just eight seconds left in regulation.
“I am exciting about our opportunity to play them (the Lions) again,” Reber said. “I don’t think we had the best game against them last time we played. We certainly have a good rivalry with them over the past couple of years. It should be a really good matchup.”
SSC foe Rollins (13-4) earned the fourth seed in the South Region and will battle undefeated Lock Haven (18-0) in the first round. The winners of the two first-round games will meet at Kerr Stadium in Salem, Va., for the semifinals on Saturday, May 16. The NCAA Division II Championship Game will be held the following day, Sunday, May 17 in Salem.
