DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Florida Southern men’s lacrosse head coach Marty Ward was invited to speak at the Florida Athletic Coaches Association’s (FACA) boy’s lacrosse clinic from December 4-6 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The FACA boy’s and girl’s lacrosse clinics are the first of their kind in Florida and were designed to give high school coaches a chance to hear from experts on topics including coaching techniques, injury prevention, officiating and rules, and leadership.

Ward was one of several successful college coaches from all three NCAA divisions and the professional ranks invited to speak at the boy’s clinic. The list of scheduled presenters includes the following:

– Jim Berkman, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA men’s lacrosse history and winner of 10 NCAA Division III titles at Salisbury University. – John Danowksi, winner of three of the last five NCAA Division I championships at Duke University. – Stan Ross, head coach of Major League Lacrosse’s Florida Launch professional lacrosse team. – Rory Whipple, head coach at the University of Tampa and the winningest coach in Division II lacrosse.

“It was definitely an honor to be asked to speak among such a great group of coaches,” Ward said.

Under Ward, the Mocs finished the 2014 season with the best record in the program’s six-year history at 11-4. They ended the year ranked sixth in the South Region in the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings and 12th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Coaches’ Poll. In addition, defenseman DJ Lubs earned All-American honors for the second consecutive season.

Ward will discuss his area of expertise: goaltending. He was a two-time Honorable Mention All-American goaltender at Division II Limestone and twice competed on the international stage with the Iroquois Nationals at the World Championships. He won a bronze medal with the Iroquois this past summer at the 2014 World Championships in Denver.

During his tenure at Florida Southern, Ward coached former Moccasin goaltender Andrew Almansberger to All-Deep South Conference (2011) and Deep South Conference All-Tournament honors (2010). In 2014, goalie Matt Lalli was named to the Sunshine State Conference All-Tournament Team as a freshman.

“I will be presenting some drills and philosophies that work in the development of a goalie,” Ward said. “These are similar techniques I learned growing up that allowed me to become a well-rounded goalie, and the same ideals I teach my players at Florida Southern.”
