Florida Southern’s Megan Asper Preseason POY Finalist
BALTIMORE – Florida Southern All-American Megan Asper has been named one of five finalists by Lacrosse Magazine in its NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse Preseason Player of the Year fan poll.
Asper is poised to lead the Moccasins in the upcoming 2015 season after a historic junior campaign which saw her and her team rewrite most of the records from the program’s three-year history.
The senior from Parkton, Md., led the Mocs in shots (101), shots on goal (89), draw controls (76), goals (62), ground balls (55), caused turnovers (25), free-position goals (13) and game-winning goals (5). She set program records in goals, goals per game (3.44), shots, shots on goal and free-position goals. Out of 175 nationally-ranked NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse players, Asper ranked 12th in goals scored, 15th in goals per game, 21st in draw controls, 28th in points and 35th in ground balls. As a team in 2014, Florida Southern ranked third out of 85 NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse teams in points and scoring offense, fifth in caused turnovers, sixth in ground balls and ninth draw controls. The Mocs’ 16 victories also represented a new program high.
Asper collected a mantle full of awards last season. In addition to being crowned an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) First-Team All-American, she was tabbed the Independent Player of the Year and was named to both All-Independent and All-South Region First Teams.
The 5-5 midfielder holds FSC career records with 136 goals, 150 ground balls, 180 draw controls and 63 caused turnovers. Asper is one of two Mocs to start all 49 games throughout the team’s first three seasons of existence.
