Clash for Cancer, May 9

Mother’s Day weekend in Delray has become a tradition of giving for players in South Florida. For the past four years our community has come together to support local player and quadruple amputee, Mikey Stolzenberg in an annual tournament called “Pockets & Sockets.” The tournament has become a South Florida tradition of fun and charity as the community rallied together to Play with a Purpose.
“We’re so very grateful for the community support through the years and we love how the community has always come together to play for Mikey,” says Laura Stolzenberg, Mikey’s mother. “Although we’ve decided to let Mikey take a break this year, both myself and Mikey hope to see the tradition continue with the community coming together to play the sport we all love for a greater purpose, to help others.”
“When contemplating the many charities that we could support, it occurred to us that regardless of age, background, location, or team affiliations, nearly every one of us have been touched by cancer. So we’re excited to announce that “Clash for Cancer” will occur, Saturday, May 9 at the Seacrest Soccer Complex in Delray Beach,” says tournament director, Jennifer Bolger. “What better way to give back, than to help fight a disease that has affected so many of our lives.”
The tournament will be a 7 v 7 format open to girls and boys with age divisions U9-HS. This is a wonderful event for any and all recreation teams, middle school teams, HS teams, travel teams, or even a team of friends are encouraged to enter. Coaches are available to help self-formed teams who may need a coach for the day.
The cost for the event is $650 per team. Thanks to the generosity of the lacrosse community, many people have donated their time, supplies such as balls and field paint, and referee services in order to help keep the team fees low so that it is affordable for all to participate. All profits from this tournament will be donated to local cancer charities. “We are doing our due diligence to choose charities that pass the majority of their donations directly to the patients and families. It’s important for us to know that we’re really making a difference and helping people in our local community,” says Bolger.
