(Men’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (5-4, 1-0 SSC) extended its win streak to four on Saturday, earning a hard fought 11-10 road victory over No. 17 Lynn (4-4, 0-1 SSC) in both teams’ Sunshine State Conference opener at Bobby Campbell Stadium. Reid Chaconas led the way for FIT with four points on two goals and two assists. Nick Wynne tallied two goals and two ground balls, while Carson Clough and Brett Pohlmeyer chipped in one goal and one assist apiece. Five other Panthers scored goals in the contest. Clough and Nate Menninger collected four ground balls each. Daniel Flock (5-4) was impressive in between the pipes for the Panthers making 16 saves, including nine in the third quarter alone. FIT won despite a 7-of-22 performance on face-offs. Lynn also finished with more shots, 49-37, and ground balls, 37-29. However, the Panthers were very successful on clear attempts, completing 18-of-20 attempts. The Fighting Knights got on the board quickly in the game on a goal by Caleb Cerf just 21 seconds after the opening draw. FIT answered with consecutive goals by Logan Sweeney, Wynne and Chaconas and took a 3-1 edge at the 6:31 mark of the first quarter. Lynn’s Johnny Gavin converted a man-up goal from Austin Jerhoff to cut the deficit to one just before the end of the quarter. Pohlmeyer’s solo effort opened the second period scoring and increased FIT’s lead to 4-2. After Mikey Urso made it a one goal game with 7:04 remaining, Matt Weinstein scored off a pass from Pohlmeyer to push the Panthers’ advantage back to 5-3 with less than five minutes left until halftime. Jerhoff scored all three of his goals over the final 3:29 of the first half, the third coming with one second left on the clock, to hand Lynn a 6-5 edge at the break. Urso’s second of the game increased LU’s lead to 7-5. Florida Tech responded with four of the next five goals, on tallies by Chaconas, Cody Martin, Clough and Austen Zugelter, to regain a 9-8 edge with 13:24 left in the fourth quarter. Consecutive goals by Conor Vaughan and Urso helped Lynn take a 10-9 lead at the 10:34 mark of the quarter. Wynne then scooped up a loose ball in front of the Fighting Knights’ crease and fired it in for the game-tying goal with 9:50 remaining. The Panthers’ defense needed a big play after Clough was called for a one minute penalty with 3:09 left and the score still tied at 10-10. The man-down unit answered the call, as Flock made a save and found Menninger on the break, who then fed Addison Abramson for the game winner with 2:15 remaining. Flock stopped Lynn on its next possession and Florida Tech was able to run out the rest of the clock for its fifth victory of the season. The Panthers resume their SSC slate next Saturday, April 1, hosting rival Florida Southern at 7 p.m. ET at Florida Tech Panther Stadium.
