Florida has a growing number of very good lacrosse players. But to go from “very good” to “Big Time” you have to make big time plays in big time games. Alex Forehand just established himself as a big time player.
The junior attackman for Lake Mary has been very good for a long time. I am reluctant to call it a “break out” game for him because it’s not as if he just appeared on the scene. We knew he is good. But his performance last night was epic.
Lake Mary jumped out early with two goals by Forehand in the first four minutes of the game. Lake Mary, as usual, was riding hard. The Rams have one of the best rides in the state, and the second Lake Mary goal was set up by a successful ride effort that created a turn over at midfield.
Ponte Vedra answered when Miles Silva scored a nifty underhand goal while he was backpedaling away from Chandler Harrison in the goal for Lake Mary. Rob Peeters scored the next one for the Sharks and he drew a flag on the play.
Nick Platt robbed the Sharks of the opportunity to take the lead on the EMO when he made a great take away and the Rams killed the penalty. Zach Gussman scored as he wrapped around from X and got an underhand shot into the goal with under a minute left in the first. Despite the tie score Lake Mary had outshot the Sharks 11-2 in the first quarter. But just as PV had done most of the season their shots came right on the doorstep and they were able to make both of their first quarter shots count.
Two minutes into the second quarter Tyeler Castillo split the defense and took one right down the string line to put Lake Mary up by two goals. Reid Smith then answered back with two of his own goals in just :47 seconds to tie the game at four each.
Lake Mary coach Garry Robinson called a pair of timeouts to get his team situated and it worked. Coming out of the second time out Charlie Ragault took a feed from Zach Gussman and it worked just like the coaches drew it up to get the lead back for the Rams.
Charlie Ragault then capitalized on an EMO for the Rams with just under four minutes remaining in the half. Less than a minute later Alex Forehand finished off his hat trick with a tremendous effort picking up an offensive GB and finishing quickly. Zach Gussman then score again with another drive from X while a flag was down to give the Rams a four goal lead. On the ensuing EMO Castillo found Forehand uncovered on the crease and made the feed. Forehand pushed the Lake Mary run to five to end the half with a 9-4 halftime lead.
Lake Mary started the second half with possession and an EMO and used the opportunity for a two and half minute possession. Garrett Gile got a great shot on net but sophomore goalie, Robert Martin, who came into play the second half, made a great save.
The first four minutes of the half was scoreless until Rob Peeters made the most of an EMO opportunity for Ponte Vedra with fantastic shot. But just :20 seconds later Forehand would answer for his fifth goal of the night as he and Gussman showed some great teamwork. Gussman made a sweep from X and was just close enough to getting topside on the wing to freeze the crease defender. Forehand slipped in behind him and took the perfect feed from Gussman and finished.
Two minutes later Forehand scored his sixth goal of the night on a huge shot from outside. Reid Smith scored for PV with 1:33 left in the third on a great individual effort as he dodged and re-dodged to finally get his hands free and got a nice shot off from close range.
The scoring was slow and all Lake Mary in the fourth as Charlie Ragault and Tyeler Castillo scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart early in the quarter. Lake Mary finished the game just the way they started it. With just over five minutes left a tremendous effort on the ride turned the ball over and Kyle Sande picked up the GB and found Alex Forehand for his seventh goal of the night and gave Lake Mary the 14-6 lead they would take to the final horn.
