CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite a fourth-quarter comeback, the Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team was unable to overcome a tough Queens University of Charlotte squad, falling to the Royals 13-9 on Sunday afternoon at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park.  The Lions drop to 1-2 on their young season, while the Royals improve to 2-0. Saint Leo goalie Patrick Berry made 14 saves on the day after facing 50 shots and 27 shots on frame.  Matt Obermeyer led the team with a hat trick, while George Proechel and Tom Horn scored two goals each.  Ty Trombly and Chris Caiazza rounded out the goal count with one each, while Horn and Kevin Hutchinson earned one assist apiece. Queens was paced by Corey Geroy, who posted four goals and two assists for six points on the day. The Royals opened up the scoring on the afternoon, posting two quick goals to pull ahead to a 2-0 lead with 13:03 on the clock in the first quarter.  But an unassisted goal from Trombly cut the Lions’ deficit in half just eight seconds later, and the Lions found their stride. Queens rallied two more back-to-back goals within 20 seconds of each other, pulling ahead to 4-1 with 9:38 remaining in the first period, but Proechel netted two consecutive goals to leave the Lions down by one with 4:33 left in the first quarter.  Queens found the back of the net one more time before the break thanks to a goal from Jimmy Baker with 14 ticks to go, pulling the Royals out to a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period. Saint Leo hit the second stanza on a mission as Obermeyer took advantage of a man-up opportunity to pull the Lions back to within one with 9:44 before the halftime break.   Geroy answered back for the Royals, but a goal from Caiazza with 2:32 to go left the Lions down by one with a score of 6-5 at the half. The third quarter stymied the Lions as they watched Queens outscore them 5-0, pulling ahead to an 11-5 advantage and forcing the Lions to regroup and change their game plan for the final 15 minutes. The Green and Gold opened up the fourth quarter with a goal from Horn, but two more tallies from the Royals extended their lead to 13-7 with 9:27 remaining.  Saint Leo turned up the intensity, scoring three unanswered goals to close out the game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the six goal deficit. The Lions return to action on Wednesday, February 29, when they host Deep South Conference opponent Rollins College.  Faceoff against the Tars is slated for 6 p.m.  Fans will be able to catch all of the action live through saintleolions.com.  For the latest news, updates, and information on the Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team, be sure to follow the Lions on Facebook and Twitter.
