The Mocs, who received votes in the latest USILA Division II Coaches’ poll released Monday afternoon, improved their record to 4-2 with the W, while the Crusaders fall to 3-5 with tonight’s loss. Tonight was also the first Moccasin victory over Belmont Abbey since 2012, when both teams were still members of the Deep South Conference. Senior Shane Tompkins (Bear, Del.) put FSC on the board early with a goal at 12:54. Belmont Abbey answered back 1:34 later with a man-down goal to tie the game at one apiece. Junior Dane Sorensen (Victoria, British Columbia), recently named the Brine Division II Player of the Week by Inside Lacrosse, and Tompkins put Florida Southern back on top 3-1. The Crusaders would score the next three goals in a 3:07 span to end the first quarter on top 4-3. Aside from Belmont Abbey’s man-down goal, all tallies in the opening quarter were unassisted. The Mocs stepped on the gas in the second quarter and scored five unanswered goals in a span of 7:29, starting with freshman Cody Dyer‘s (Slingerlands, N.Y.) goal at 10:27 to tie the score at four-all. Tompkins connected with Sorensen for the go-ahead goal at 8:28 before Tompkins buried back-to-back goals to widen the Florida Southern lead. Dyer finished off the second quarter score-fest with a goal at 2:56 off a dish from freshmanGrant VanOverbeke (Rosemount, Min.) to give FSC an 8-4 advantage going into halftime. Florida Southern refused to let up as they scored another four straight to open the third quarter of play. Dyer buried his third goal of the night to kick off the quarter, while sophomore Matt Boutin (Leonardtown, Md.) added his name to the list of Moccasin goal-scorers at 12:31 to widen the lead, before senior captain David Beaumont (New Westminster, British Columbia) went the length of the field to bury a shot past the Crusader goalkeeper for the first goal of his collegiate career. VanOverbeke set up Sorensen for his third goal of the night to give the Mocs a 12-4 lead before Belmont Abbey finally stopped the bleeding with 50 seconds to go before the end of the quarter to trail 12-5 going into the final stanza of play. The Crusaders scored the first two goals of the quarter to pull to within five of the Mocs, but senior Chris Murphy (Camillus, N.Y.) put one in the back of the net to give Florida Southern a 13-7 lead. Belmont Abbey reduced the deficit to five twice in the final seven minutes of play, but Sorensen scored the final two Moccasin goals to give them the 15-9 lead as the final horn sounded. For the fourth consecutive time, Sorensen registered five goals on the evening and continues to put up incredible numbers in the month of March. Tompkins registered a season-high four goals off the bench and added one assist to give the senior five points on the evening. Dyer added three goals and an assist to the winning effort, and although he was held scoreless for the first time all season, VanOverbeke contributed with three assists in the win. Senior Dan Krispinsky (Fort Myers, Fla.) was once again dominant from the face-off circle, going 19-27 with 11 ground balls while also causing one turnover. Murphy, junior Trenell Boggans (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Kyle McLaughlin (Woolwich Township, N.J.) tied for the team-lead with two caused turnovers each in the victory, and freshman Matt Lalli (New Milford, Conn.) made nine stops in a winning effort. Riley Quinlan paced the Crusaders with four goals, while Connor Sellars and Scott Steele each put two in the back of the net for Belmont Abbey. Steele also led with seven ground balls, while David Salter and Kevin Costa each caused three Moccasin turnovers in the loss. Brett Lawless was credited with the loss after allowing 10 goals against six saves in 32:29 of play. He was spelled by Ryan McMahon early in the third quarter, who recorded four stops against five goals in 27:31 of action. The Mocs travel for the first time since February when they head west to Tampa to challenge the sixth-ranked Spartans (6-0) at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex at 8 p.m. in a Sunshine State Conference tilt.
