
FSC: Women’s Lacrosse Grabs Two Wins on Friday

LEBANON, IL – Florida Southern College women’s lacrosse grabbed a pair of wins on Friday, defeating McKendree 18-14 before blowing out Rockhurst, 19-6, at Leemon Field.
The No. 1 Moccasins (3-1) took down McKendree (0-1) in the afternoon, and cruised to victory in convincing fashion against Rockhurst (1-1) in the nightcap.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MCKENDREE
• Florida Southern fell behind by two goals early in the first half, but stormed back with four-straight goals to take the lead and never trailed the rest of the way. After the Bearcats scored twice in the first seven minutes, the Moccasins struck for four scores in less than a minute.
• Meghan O’Brien scored Florida Southern’s first goala of the day with 21:29 to go in the first half. Shannon Gilfedder would find the back of the net just 13 seconds later to tie the game. O’Brien scored again with 20:48 on the clock, and Kendall Kerge scored at the 21:38 mark to give FSC all the momentum.
• The Mocs led by as many as three goals (6-3) with just over 11 minutes to play, but McKendree scored three-straight to tie things up with a little over seven minutes in the half. However, Florida Southern reeled off five-straight goals to end the half, two from Kerge, to take an 11-6 lead at the half.
• FSC never led by less than three goals in the second half, and led by as many as seven goals (18-11) before McKendree struck three times in the final three minutes to make the final 18-14.
• Taylor Gillis made 10 stops in goal for the Moccasins, while Kerge (3), O’Brien (3), Dani Bursinger (2), Catherine DeKorte (2) and Shannon Mazza (2) each had multiple goals. O’Brien also added five assists in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ROCKHURST
• Florida Southern struck first when Riley Bannatyne scored less than three minutes into the game, but Rockhurst evened things up just two minutes later. The Moccasins were able to seize momentum for good by scoring three-straight goals, including two more from Bannatyne, to jump in front 4-1 with 18:53 to play in the opening half.
• The Moccasins would outscore the Hawks 7-2 over the remainder of the first half to take an insurmountable 11-3 lead into the half. Jackson Marshall opened FSC’s second-half scoring, and Bannatyne added two more goals to make it 14-4 with 17:59 to go and invoke the 10-goal running clock.
• Florida Southern would lead by as many as 14 goals (18-4) before Rockhurst scored twice in the final 10 minutes. Casey O’Brien added a goal with 11 seconds lef to make the final score 19-6.
• The Moccasins outshot the Hawks 33-20, collected 18 ground balls to Rockhurst’s 12, and won 18-of-26 draw controls. Bannatyne (5), Grace Glinecki (4), O’Brien (3), and Julia Couch (2) each scored multiple goals, and Couch added three assists. Alanna Zambetti got the start in goal and made five saves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Florida Southern improved to 2-0 all-time against McKendree, and is 1-0 all-time against Rockhurst. The Moccasins combined to outscore its two opponents by a tally of 37-20, and recorded 62 shots on the day while allowing 56 shots.
• The Moccasin goalkeepers combined to make 15 saves. A total of 14 different players scored at least one goal on the day, and nine players scored multiple goals in each game. Eleven different Mocs tallied an assist during the doubleheader.
• Friday marked the first of two doubleheaders for the Moccasins this season. Florida Southern will face Fort Lewis and West Virginia Wesleyan on March 6 in Lakeland.
