FSU’s Strong Teamwork Pays Off as the ‘Noles Remain Undefeated

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Despite the fact that FSU is without 5 starters (3 defensemen, 1 goalie and 1 midfielder) and a key LSM, they are off to a 6-0 start.  Even with these 6 players out for the entire season, FSU has shown great promise with key victories over several talented SELC teams including UCF, South Carolina and Liberty University. First year coach, Matt Doyle, has instilled in this team a “next man up” mentality; if a teammate goes down, another teammate is ready to step in and fill that void. The team is extremely young, with 7 freshmen on the field, playing about 75% of the game.  When asked about his thoughts on having such a young team, Doyle responds, “These freshmen no longer play like freshmen. They’ve stepped up to the challenge, they listen well, and they understand their responsibilities.” The one word that comes to his mind in describing this 2014 group is “TEAM”.  “These guys genuinely care about each other.  They all hang out together, they tease each other, and they have each other’s backs on and off the field. Good teams have this type of camaraderie.   And as a team, they have risen to every occasion.  The strong leadership of Andrew Kiggen, Darby Brower and Tyler Selman has helped immensely.” “The kids know that I don’t treat this as a club sport.  To me, it’s Division 1 lacrosse. They believe in what we are doing, and no matter what happens in the future, this 2014 team will always have a special place in my heart.” FSU travels to Texas this weekend, playing TCU on March 22, and Texas State on March 23.  To see the remaining game schedule for the 2014 season, visit www.mcla.us/team/florida_state/2014/schedule.html
