FIT rides five-game winning streak into matchup with the Division III UMass Beacons
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (7-1) prepares for its clash with UMass-Boston (3-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium.
The No. 12 Panthers are riding the program’s longest winning streak into the matchup with the Division III Beacons.
Florida Tech won its fifth straight game when it defeated Saint Michael’s on Wednesday. It was a back-and-forth first quarter between the two teams. Senior goalie Eric Biller started the scoring off by tallying his first career goal one minute and two seconds after the opening face-off. The Purple Knights then scored five of the next eight goals to take a 5-4 lead into the second quarter.
The momentum shifted after the first stanza as FIT registered nine goals in the second quarter. Florida Tech outscored Saint Michael’s 6-2 after halftime to win its seventh game of the season, 19-11.
With the victory, the Panthers have now surpassed the single-season wins mark set during the 2013 campaign.
Senior attackman Zach Wynne had his best showing for the Crimson and Gray, finishing with four goals and four assists while senior midfielder Brian Bacarella added four goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Nick Wynne and sophomore attackman Jason Terry each scored three goals and dished out one assist against the Purple Knights.
Sophomore Travis Wunder dominated at the face-off X, winning 23-of-30 and collecting 12 ground balls.
UMass-Boston is on the second leg of its Florida trip after knocking off Bard College (N.Y.) 10-4 in Davenport, Florida. The Beacons controlled throughout, never allowing Bard to jump ahead in the game. UMass-Boston tallied six of the first eight goals and outscored its opponent 4-2 in the second half to earn its third victory of the season.
Junior Noah Ellis paced his team with three goals and one assist and senior Michael Kennedy added two goals and one assist.
This will be the Panthers’ first of two consecutive games against Massachusetts-based Division III programs. FIT takes on MIT on Monday night at Pirate Stadium.
