Lynn Lacrosse Season Comes to an End in SSC Semifinals with Loss to #9 Tampa
Tampa, Fla.- Lynn University’s historical lacrosse season came to an end with a 13-5 loss to Tampa in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Semifinals on Friday night. The Fighting Knights, who were picked to finish last in the SSC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. The Blue & White’s loss to top-seed Tampa ends the year for Lynn, who finishes 8-7 overall with its first winning season in program history.
Tampa took the lead at 9:51 when Jack Schmidt scored unassisted for the first goal of the game. Four and a half minutes later his tallied his second goal of the game on an assist from A.J. Leary for a 2-0 Spartans lead. UT scored back-to-back goals saw Tampa ahead 4-0 with 4:26 to play in the first quarter. Tyler Janvrin scored an unassisted goal a minute later putting the Fighting Knights on the board. At 2:39 Brian Kiel scored unassisted for the Blue & White to cut the Spartans lead in half, 4-2, which would hold until the end of the period.
An unassisted goal by Austin Jerhoff made it a one-goal game at 8:08 in the second quarter but Tampa pulled ahead when Nick Ferreiro scored unassisted to make it a 5-3 UT lead. At 4:34 Anthony Rainone scored off a rebound bringing the game within one, 5-4. With 2:49 left in the half Bobby Calhoun gave the Spartans a two-goal edge with a unassisted goal. At the half, Tampa led 6-4.
Vincent Genovesi won 8-of-11 face-offs in the half finding success on all four in the second period. Tampa edged Lynn 18-12 in shots in the half but Lynn’s goalkeeper Nick Nehring made four saves while A.J. Arnold made just three.
Each Team tallied a goal in the third quarter for a 7-5 Spartans lead with 15 minutes left in the game. Tampa tallied six goals, two in the final two minutes on an open goal, to win 13-5 advancing to the SSC Finals on Sunday where they will face Florida Tech.
Jerhoff was the only Knight to have a multi-goal game and Rainone and Kiel both had a goal and an assist for two points each. Genovesi went 9-for-18 at the X while snagging a team-best five groundballs. Nehring made six saves in 57 minutes played before Dante Egan relieved him with two and a half minutes left.
Lynn finishes its historical season 8-7 overall, seven more wins than last season. The Blue & White graduates three seniors this December, Tyler Briggs, Nick Haggarty and Brandon Rothstein but returns All-SSC Second Team honorees Rainone and Shaun McDonald.

Spartans Outlast Knights En Route To SSC Title Game

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans men’s lacrosse team defeated the Lynn University Fighting Knights Friday night in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinal game. The Spartans defeated the Fighting Knights 13-5 en route to a championship game appearance against the Florida Tech Panthers.
Tampa started the game hot, as they were able to put up the first four goals of the game, to jump out to a 4-0 lead with 4:26 left in the quarter. Lynn would respond with two unanswered goals of their own to end the quarter trailing by just two goals. The two teams would score two goals each in the second quarter, as UT held a 6-4 lead after the first 30 minutes of play.
The third quarter was quiet, as each of the teams only recorded one goal in the period. However, in the fourth and final quarter, the Spartans were able to catch fire, as they produced six goals, while holding the opposition scoreless.
Jake Schmidt was key for Tampa, as the junior attacker scored a game high six goals on eight shots. When asked about Schmidt’s performance head coach Rory Whipple said, ” They shutting us off and other people had to step up. We have too many powerful guys, so they can’t shut down the whole team. Schmidt had a great game and stepped up big for us.”
Joining Schmidt on the score sheet were Sean Giampietro, who notched two goals, Mike Morris, Zac Goldbach, Nick Ferreiro, Bobby Calhoun, T.K. Mikolich, and Dante Querci, who recorded a goal each. Conor Whipple dished out a team high three assists for Tampa.
As a team, UT was able to cause eight turnovers, while picking up 23 groundballs, and converting on all 19 clear attempts.
Tampa returns to action on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as they try to earn their second consecutive Sunshine State Conference Tournament Championship.
