Treasure Coast Lacrosse Shootout Visits Hallowed Baseball Grounds

I have opinions about a few gents who used to grace these legendary fields.  Sandy Koufax and Kirk Gibson played attack.  Jackie Robinson and Maury Wills – midfielders. atcbattedballsbetter Don Drysdale had to be a pole.  Roy Campanella was obviously a goalie.  Looking at all of the young faces (including the parents), one imagines many have never heard of the legends who have graced these grounds.  Mantle, Maris, Dimaggio, Aaron, Clemente…I bet they’ve heard of Casey Powell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PtIg-kGPOc It seems Dodgertown is keeping up with the times by hosting the first ever Treasure Coast Lacrosse Shootout organized by Broward Lacrosse Advantage.  Modern day Dodgertown has beautiful baseball fields with perfectly manicured outfields.  The infields are still Georgia red clay, and the extra area on the diamonds served as a perfect recreation area for families and players waiting to play the next game. atcgoodaction To quote another famous baseball goalie, Yogi Berra, “The future ain’t what it used to be.” The tournament ran five divisions, from U9 through High School.  Pool games were played Saturday and Sunday with play-offs finished early Sunday afternoon  Results were as follows: High School Champions – Miami Thunder 19 Runners Up – Pathfindersatccudalax U15 Champions – Barracudas Runners Up – Stampede U13 Champions – Barracudas West Runners Up – Stampede U11atcgoa Champions – 22 Select Runners Up – Barracudas U9 Champions – 22 Select Runners Up – Barracudas

Back to baseball and lacrosse.  From 2000 to 2009, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of kids aged 7 to 17 playing baseball fell 24% (from the Wall Street Journal http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052748703712504576232753156582750).

Lacrosse has a decidedly different trend.  Over the last five years at the youth level, the number of boys playing has increased 62 percent and the number of girls playing has increased 61 percent (from US Lacrosse http://www.uslacrosse.org/multimedia-center/press-releases-news/postid/58/2012-us-lacrosse-participation-report.aspx).  These are great figures, but a weekend trip to Dodgertown is all the proof you need.atcyardsale

atccage The Treasure Coast Lacrosse Shootout was a fun event, one to work on skills and compete while enjoying quality family time.  This last sign is very confusing, and I  can only think about Ron Burgundy when I look at it. Cheers!
