CHERRY HILL, NEW JERSEY — The men’s national lacrosse teams of Israel and Philippines will meet in their second annual exhibition game, at Haddonfield High School on August 10th, to help kick off the 2014 JCC Maccabi Games, an Olympic-style sporting competition for Jewish teenagers held each summer in North America.
Israel, which recently earned a No. 7 world ranking following their quarterfinal appearance in the quadrennial FIL World Lacrosse Championships, is the “home team” this year, with the game taking place in conjunction with the Maccabi Games, which are being hosted by the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill.
Several JCC Maccabi alumni are suiting up for Israel, including Baltimore forward Jory Parson and Ft. Lauderdale defender Ian McAdorey. Four young Israeli prospects who are spending this summer in the U.S. — Benor Buniel and Yotam Drori of Ashkelon, and Mor Cohen and Ori Miron of Tel Aviv — are also expected to see extensive action in the exhibition, before competing themselves in the Maccabi Games.
Philippines, who earned a 7th-place finish in their debut tournament with an 11-5 victory over Portugal at the Elite/Open Division of the 2014 World Lacrosse Festival, were recently recognized as the 50th member of the Federation of International Lacrosse. The Philippines Lacrosse Association has been working tirelessly to promote the game back home, establishing year-round programs at Silliman University in Dumaguete City and International School Manila, as well as programs in Cebu City and Bacolod City.
Admission is free for any players, coaches, or volunteers who are associated with the JCC Maccabi Games, and $10 for all others. Faceoff is slated for 12:30 PM.
Fans are encouraged to bring lightly-used equipment to donate to Israeli and Filipino lacrosse players who could otherwise not participate in the shared passion of lacrosse. We especially need sticks, helmets, and goggles, but any protective equipment is welcome.
The match will be 80-minutes in length, and will be played under FIL rules and regulations; it will also be streamed live online at www.accesslacrosse.com.
