The Jesuit Tigers (8-3) traveled to face the Hornets of Bishop Moore (8-2) on a hot Saturday afternoon in Central Florida March 14th. Tiger Senior Stephano Mastro (Mount St Mary) (4gs) opened scoring at the 1:00 minute mark and the Tigers looked to be off to a good start. The Hornets then scored 3 unanswered goals led by Senior attackman James Duhon (4gs) to end the first period 3-1 Hornets. Bishop Moore dominated the half with 23 shots to Tigers 11 and ended the half with a 5-2 lead.
The artificial turf at Bishop Moore is a great surface but it definitely had an effect on both teams with the heat. Despite the heat the game was well played by both teams with very few penalties and well officiated. Tampa Jesuit looked to gain momentum in the 3rd quarter out scoring the Hornets 3-2, closing the lead to 7-5 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
With 6:31 remaining in the 4th quarter the game was delayed 30 minutes for EMS to attend to an injured Tiger player. The player was removed by stretcher for precautionary evaluation and has since cleared, but it was one of the more worrisome moments of the game. The game recommenced after a short warm up with the Tigers down 6-7. At the 5 minute mark Tiger Senior Midfielder Hunter Revord tied the game up at 7-7 with a great dodge and finish.
The Tigers looked to have momentum when the Hornets were called for a slash with under 4 minutes remaining. The Hornets man up defense had been perfect all day holding the Tigers to 0-4 and not only stopped the man up opportunity but Hornet Junior Goal Keeper Max Kucera (9 saves) made a big save and immediately fired to a streaking James Duhon who took it past midfield and delivered a strike from 15 yards to take the lead on man down.
The Hornets won the ensuing face off and the Tigers fought desperately to regain possession to get one more opportunity to tie the game. With :16 left in the game Sophmore Defensemen Nick Mastro was able to strip the ball on an inbound play at X. The Tigers immediately found Senior Midfielder Connor Lynch who made a great catch in traffic at midfield and called time out with :10 seconds left. With :10 seconds remaining Tiger Senior Stephano Mastro took the ball at midfield and dodged hard right firing a shot at lower corner of the goal which goal keeper Max Kucera deflected with perfect positioning preserving the 8-7 win for the Hornets.
Bishop Moore (9-2) will travel to face District 11 opponent and Defending State Champion Highland Prep (9-2) on March 16th, while the Jesuit Tigers (8-4) play at home on Monday the 16th, against Cannon School (2-1) from North Carolina.
