Jason D’Aoust, a recently graduated senior from Wellington High School in Wellington, has been awarded the Bob Scott Award for US Lacrosse South Florida Chapter for the 2014 season. This award recognizes a player in each Area who goes above and beyond in service to his team, school, and community. This player exemplifies the fundamentals of the game of lacrosse, is always working hard to improve his game and is a leader amongst his teammates both on and off the field, and like Bob Scott, has a true passion and love for the game.
D’Aoust, who played attack for the Wellington Wolverines, served as the offensive captain this past season. Jason came to the Wolverines as a freshman on the JV team and was quickly moved to starting attack on varsity and spent the next 4 years tallying 122 goals, 86 assists, and 162 ground balls. Jason has made the All-District Team all four years and as a senior picked up All-Region and PB Post All-Conference awards and played a big part of Wellington’s success as consecutive District Champions for the third consecutive year. Jason signed an NLI in November and will be playing D2 lacrosse next year for the Saint Leo Lions in the Sunshine State Conference.
D’Aoust was nominated for the Bob Scott Award by his coach Joe Calby. Calby noticed that Jason was always looking out for his teammates and believed that he was a motivator when it came to developing players, especially younger classmen. This especially hit home when Jason approached Calby to start a middle school lacrosse program earlier this year and asked to borrow equipment and balls. Jason and his teammate Bryce Dalton, had met with the principal, the athletic activities director, marketed the program and then ran the entire operation during the Fall and Winter months concentrating on fundamentals. Many of the players will be attending Wellington High next year and will have had some extra exposure through their middle school training. This was in addition to his volunteering with the Wellington Wolfpack Lacrosse Club, his refereeing duties, his stick stringing business, the one-on-one work he did with individual players, and now coaching for the Wellington Lacrosse Club. As a Coach Calby summed it up well at the award ceremonies when he stated, “Jason embodies what we like to see in players. Someone who loves and grows the game by giving back. He gets it”.
