JU rallies, falls short at Siena

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University fought back from an early deficit but ran out of gas in the second half as the Dolphins took a 12-9 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference defeat at the hands of Siena Saturday in Loudenville, N.Y. After JU’s Conor Igoe scored the first goal of the contest, just 1:14 into the game, the Dolphins (4-6, 1-2) gave up five consecutive goals to fall behind 5-1 after one period. From JUDolphins.com The Dolphins, however, roared back in the second quarter as Cameron Mann and Donovan Lange each had two goals and freshman Ari Waffle another in a 5-0 period for JU and a 6-5 halftime lead against the defending MAAC champs. The teams battled even through the third quarter until Siena’s Colin Clive scored with :38 to play and a 9-8 lead. To start the fourth, Siena scored three more goals to settle the win. Igoe ended the game with a pair of goals and TJ Kenary and Quint Miller scored for JU which lost its second consecutive game for the first time this season. Siena’s Bryan Neufeld, this week’s MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, had a hat trick for the Saints (6-3, 2-0) as did Chris D’Alberti. JU goalkeeper Pete DeLuca had 15 saves and four ground balls along with a caused turnover and defenseman Jake Ziegler had five ground balls and caused a turnover. The Dolphins’ Dan McNulty won 15 of 25 face-offs. The Dolphins return home Saturday for a 1 p.m. game against Canisus.
