JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -A fourth quarter rally that saw JU score four consecutive goals fell short Sunday as the Dolphins lost to Holy Cross 13-11 at D.B. Milne Field.
The loss negated hat tricks from both junior T.J. Kenary and sophomore Conor Igoe.
The Dolphins had fallen behind 12-7 when the Crusaders’ (2-2) John Hannan scored back to back goals within seconds of each other with 13:07 to play in the game.
JU (2-3) as freshman Ari Waffle, Owen Green, Igoe and Rob Wertz all scored within a 2:05 span to pull to 12-11 but Holy Cross’ Andrew Morici ended their hopes when he put in the icer with 1:50 to play after his team played keep away for nearly three minutes.
“We were just to uneven mentally in our game, intensity wise and effort wise,” JU coach Guy Van Arsdale said. “We had moments when those things were there and moments when you’d never think we had them at all. Part of the problem is that, to some degree, how we’ve practiced.”
Van Arsdale was particularly upset by his team’s lace of ground ball collection.
“The issue wasn’t so much that we weren’t there, we were in position to pick the ground ball up but we didn’t, for whatever reason, pick it up. Maybe we took our eye off the ball or were worried about someone else coming but we have to get through that ground ball and not worry who else is around there especially if we’re the first guy to it.”
JU’s Cam Mann and Max Gurowski also added goals and defenseman Jake Ziegler caused the Crusaders to turn the ball over four times. Goal keeper Pete DeLuca recorded 19 saves.
The Dolphins will play Mercer Saturday at 1 p.m. on the JU campus.
