Summerlin Academy started a boys lacrosse team as a club team seven years ago. The program has flourished, and it added a girls team four years ago. Lakeland High School also started a boys lacrosse club team four years ago.
Now both programs are on the verge of becoming FHSAA-sanctioned sports, needing final approval from the School Board this month. Adding lacrosse as an FHSAA-sanctioned sport at Lakeland High and Bartow High, of which Summerlin is a part, was the subject of a presentation given by Polk County Athletic Director Dan Talbot at a Polk County School Board workshop recently.
