Game #5 Preview
The Florida Launch hits the road for its longest stretch as it plays its first of three-consecutive games away from FAU Stadium when they travel to Selby Stadium to take on the Ohio Machine on Sunday, May 24 at 6:30 pm. This is the final time the two squads will compete in the 2015 regular season as the Launch bested Ohio 15-12 two weeks ago at home for its first win of the season.
Launch vs. Machine Series
Last season the Launch and Machine split the series with both teams winning at home. In the inaugural matchup between the teams, the Launch won a tight 10-9 contest with Casey Powell scoring the game winner with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. In the final game of the 2014 season, the Machine bested the Launch to finish the season over .500 and clinch the final spot in the MLL playoffs. Both Kieran McArdle and Powell had six points in the two bouts with the Machine. In the 2015 series, the two teams played at FAU Stadium on May 9 with the Launch winning 15-12. The Launch only trailed in the contest for three minutes, from :54 into the third quarter until 3:57 into the quarter at which point Kieran McArdle and Steven Brooks both posted back-to-back goals to put the Launch up three. In the contest, both McArdle and Powell posting season-highs for points with seven and six, respectfully.
Game #5 Recap
The Launch hosted the reigning Major League Lacrosse champions, the Denver Outlaws, the previous week falling 15-12. Despite scoring first, the Launch were outscored in the first quarter 5-2 and then 6-2 in the second to trail by seven at the intermission. The bulk of the scoring for Denver came in an 8-0 run that saw the Launch surrender its first two-point goal of the season. A different Launch team came to play in the second half, who went on a 5-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to three at 13-10. After back-to-back goals from Denver the Launch put together one final push, scoring two goals in eight seconds, but it was too late in the contest.
Coach’s Corner
Thompson Squared: “I think the biggest thing Thompsons will bring is excitement. Their style of play is perfect for the MLL and the fans can’t wait to see them in action this season.”
No Sophomore Slump: “After last season, Kieran had a goal that he wasn’t going to have a sophomore slump; he worked incredibly hard in the off-season to make sure that did not happen. He is focused and determined to have a great season and it’s paying off so far.”
A New Roman: “Roman is playing with a lot of confidence right now. He’s been given an opportunity and he’s taking full advantage of it that’s why he’s doubled what he did last season.”
Room for Improvement: “There is couple of things that we need to do in order to be successful this weekend. Number one, we need to build off of our play of the second-half verse Denver. Second, we need to be able to finish our offensive opportunities. Third, we need to be able to play great team defense. Lastly, we need to clear the ball the first time, they are a great riding team and we cannot give them second chances.
Launch Together
Two Times Two: This weekend will mark the first weekend that the Thompson brothers and Lao-Gosney brothers will all be stepping onto the field together in Launch uniforms. Last week both Roman and Cameron Lao-Gosney scored goals against the Outlaws. The previous, and only, other time that both brothers have scored in the same game was back in 2013, when the Lao-Gosney boys both scored for the Hamilton Nationals over the Ohio Machine on May 23. The Thompsons have played a total of three seasons together at Albany where they had a combined total of 364 goals and 329 assists over those three seasons.
No Go at the Arc: The Florida Launch and Ohio Machine are the only two teams in the MLL to not have scored a two-point goal so far this season. Last season, Ohio tallied six total two-point goals while the Launch sat tied last with only two.
