From News-Press – After the school board made its decision Tuesday, about 300 Lee County lacrosse players dressed in their bright team jerseys jumped up from their seats, threw their hands in the air and celebrated like they had just scored a goal.
Lacrosse will be a self-funded high school varsity sport in Lee for the next two years, the school board voted Tuesday night. The board, which will reevaluate the growth of the sport in 2013, voted 5-0. The board’s vote means that Lee County’s public high school lacrosse players can continue to play the sport this year. Lacrosse, which had been a club sport in Lee for years, was at risk of being disbanded in Lee. The Florida High School Athletic Association ruled in June to disallow schools to support or promote club sports such as lacrosse that are sanctioned by the FHSAA.
