The Bears (3-2) dominated the faceoff circle against the Mocs (1-4), winning 21 of the game’s 30 draw attempts. They won the first five draws of the game, allowing senior Ned Kaish to give Lenoir-Rhyne a two-goal lead in the first 1:09. After freshman midfielder Cody Gray (Riverview, Fla.) cut the lead in half, the Bears scored three straight to jump ahead 5-1. Sorensen ended the run with his first of a team-high five goals midway through the first quarter, but Lenoir-Rhyne senior Jay Goldsmith scored his first of what turned out to be a Bears program record seven goals, allowing them to regain a four-goal advantage, 6-2, after one quarter. Trailing 7-4 in the second quarter, Sorensen found the back of the net three times in a span of 49 seconds, knotting the game at 7-all. The attackman from Victoria, B.C., scored the first goal of his natural hat trick with only two seconds remaining on Lenoir-Rhyne’s 30-second holding penalty. The third goal also came on the extra-man opportunity. Kaish and Goldsmith each scored once before the half to put the Bears up 9-7 at the break. Sophomore attackman Grant VanOverbeke (Rosemount, Minn.) brought the Mocs within one to start the third quarter, but Goldsmith and senior Jon Hanlon each scored twice in the period to extend the Bears’ lead to five goals, 13-8. FSC committed eight of its 22 turnovers in the third quarter while the Bears gained an insurmountable lead. Freshman midfielder Lucas Claude (Calgary, Alberta) scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, but Goldsmith equaled the effort with two more, the latter giving the Bears a 16-10. Gray scored two goals for the Mocs while Claude scored twice with a pair of assists to finish second on the team with four points. Sophomore goaltender Matt Lalli (New Milford, Conn.) made 11 saves in the losing effort. Lenoir-Rhyne outshot FSC 43-to-30 while picking up 16 more groundballs (43-to-27).
