Leon Lions Move to 5-2 As They Top Mandarin 6-5

The Leon Lions defeated the visiting Mandarin Mustangs 6-5, avenging an 11-1 loss last season at Mandarin.

Leon scored early on a fast break when Danny Manausa found Trey Schulte on the doorstep for a quick goal. Mandarin quickly answered with a goal of their own. Danny Manausa found Trey Schulte again down low on a fast break, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead. Mandarin answered by capitalizing on a man up opportunity and getting a quick goal off of the face-off to take a 3-2 lead. Leon took advantage of their own man up opportunity and scored on a nice feed to the crease from Quentin Parker to Danny Manausa. Quentin Parker found the back of the net with a great shot from the top of the box to close out the first half, giving the Lions a 4-3 lead. Leon opened the second half scoring with a fast break goal from Trevor McCall, assisted by Michael Zhu. The Mustangs went on another 2 goal run to tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore Quentin Parker gave the lions the go ahead goal with 3 minutes left in the 4th with a heavy outside shot on a man up opportunity. The lions defense held firm all game allowing only 1 goal on 10 penalties for 8 minutes. Anchored by Juniors Hugh Merryday and Jonas Clingerman, as well as Sophomore Jack McAuliffe. Senior Goalie Kyle Long had 10 saves. Sophomore Shane Shively controlled the midfield for Leon, going 8-2 on face-offs and adding 11 ground balls, as well as an assist. They have a difficult task at hand this week as they host district opponent Maclay (4-1) on Tuesday and travel across town to battle Chiles (1-1) on Wednesday.
