McDonogh Downs St. Andrew’s in Defensive Battle

In the photo above, St. Andrew’s senior Thomas Lounsbury deflects McDonogh senior  Trey McGee’s (Denver) shot on goal.   Every team has a new personality each year as rosters change.  Both the visiting McDonogh Eagles from the MIAA in Maryland and the St. Andrew’s Scots are built around strong defenses in 2014.  Thursday night McDonogh was a little more stingy with a final score of 11-5.
The Eagles jumped out to 6-0 lead before Addison Lutes put the Scots on the board with a nice dodge from X at 5:43 in the second period.  Lutes added another on an assist from Sam Baker and McDonogh tacked on three more before the half ended.  The third quarter was scoreless. In the fourth, Zach Schwartz buried a tight feed from Baker, Jake Bargas scored on a breakway and Jake LeGates finished the scoring for the Scots with a strong outside shot.  Both teams substituted liberally and most who suited up saw time on the field. Maybe the best part of these interstate series is the time spent after the games with the other team. Most of the contests finish with a post game meal hosted by the home team as shown here.   Every table was filled with players and coaches from both teams dining together.  Here McDonogh’s head coach Andy Hilgartner expresses his thanks to St. Andrew’s.
