thanks to Travis Larner, Athletic Communications Assistant – Florida Southern College for this press release   LAKELAND – Less than 24 hours after dropping a heart-breaker in the final seconds to Lynn University, the Moccasin men’s lacrosse team rebounded to defeat Adams State, 21-15, in its regular-season home finale at Bryant Stadium. In a game that saw plenty of offense from both sides, the Moccasins (4-7, 1-2 SSC) and the Grizzlies (1-5, 1-2 WILA) combined for 36 goals, the most in a single game in Florida Southern history. In addition, sophomore faceoff specialist Andrew Fisher (Monkton, Md.) established an individual single-game record for faceoff wins with 26, surpassing the record he set in FSC’s win over Rollins on March 14. He also scooped a career-high 12 ground balls. As a team, the Mocs took 72 shots, tying the record set in the 28-3 win over Lees-McRae on March 10, and collected nearly twice as many ground balls as the Grizzlies, 51-to-26. The high-octane Moccasin offense was fueled by senior Dane Sorensen (Victoria, British Columbia) and sophomore Cody Dyer (Slingerlands, N.Y.). Sorensen, the leading active goal scorer in NCAA Division II, scored five goals with one assist. Dyer also scored five times, and with a team-high eight points, he tied his previous career best. Freshman Cody Gray (Riverview, Fla.) earned the second hat trick of his career while senior Brendan Mykle-Winkler (Langley, British Columbia), sophomore Ryan Wright (Jamesville, N.Y.) and freshman Joe Caridi (Holbrook, N.Y.) each scored twice for the Mocs. Adams State attackman Danny Mayes led the visitors with seven goals, one-shy of the Division II single-game high for the 2015 season. The two team went back-and-forth throughout the first one-and-a-half quarters. The Grizzlies took a 3-2 lead on a shot from Mayes that would have gone wide of the goal but was deflected into the net off of the foot of a FSC defender. Thirteen seconds later, senior defenseman Trenell Boggans (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied the game at 3-3 with his first career goal with his defensive long pole. Adams State freshman Garrett Chitwood collected the ground ball off the opening faceoff of the second quarter and took it the distance in only 17 seconds to give the Grizzlies their last lead of the afternoon at 5-4. Gray and Sorensen scored back-to-back goals only seven seconds apart to jump ahead 6-5. Fisher collected a clean draw win and quickly dished it to Sorensen for the go-ahead goal. Tied at 6-6, the Mocs took a lead they would never relinquish with a five-goal run to end the first half. Two of the goals were scored a man-up when Mayes was assessed a three-minute unreleasable penalty for using an illegal stick. Wright scored twice during the run, the latter with only 24 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Mocs an 11-6 lead. Redshirt senior John Beedle cut the deficit to four goals to start the third quarter, but the Mocs responded with another five-goal. Gray scored the first two goals of the run, and Dyer assisted on the following pair, including a man-up goal from Mykle-Winkler. Mykle-Winkler ended the run with an even-strength goal to give the Mocs a nine-goal lead at 16-7 midway through the third quarter. Sorensen scored the team’s 20th goal at the 10:12 mark in the fourth quarter, and dished the ball to Dyer as the Mocs took a 10-goal lead, their largest of the game, at 21-11. Adams State netted the last four goals of the game, three off of the stick of Mayes. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Lalli made 15 saves and surrendered 11 goals in 51:27 to earn his third win of the season. Grizzlies freshman Chris Bucciarelli made 19 in the losing effort.
