Miami Country Day Rallies Past Cardinal Gibbons 14-12

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Miami Country Day went up 2-0 on two quick goals from Brian Hernandez and Nick Bank and but Cardinal Gibbons struck back with seven consecutive goals to trail 7-2 at the end of the first quarter, caused by a number of MCDS defensive breakdowns. Hernandez led a second quarter comeback, scoring two goals and assisted on one by David Butter to help cut the gap to 9-6 at halftime. The third quarter was back and forth when Jordan Karp decided to get in the mix.  Hernandez and Karp combined for 4 goals in the quarter, 2 each, plus Karp assisted Hernandez on one of those.  Coach Penengo stated that this is how he wanted his attack to play, to take control when the team needs it the most.    The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle yet Karp stuck one off a great look from Butter.  Butter then took a feed from Hernandez and ripped one by the goalie’s ear for the 13th goal and game winner.   Karp put the nail in the coffin, icing it with 7 minutes to play for his 6th goal on the night. Hernandez finished with 5 goals and 2 assists.  Butter added 2 goals and 1 assist.  And Karp finished with 6 goals and 1 assist.   Aaron Karlton added an assist to go with Bank’s goal to round out the scoring. Paul Julien-Giraud finished with 16 saves, but none bigger than with 8 minutes to play, stuffing a point blank shot after MCDS took the lead Pablo Vivas and Drew Hanson split the face-offs for MCDS.   MCDS managed to win this game even though they were able to field only fifteen players.  Photo Courtesy of Jake Ryan Images
