CORAL GABLES, Fla. – With a brand new coaching staff and a cast of new faces, the University of Miami Hurricanes had high hopes for the 2015 season. For a team that only lost three players from last year’s roster due to either graduation or transfer, the new talent only added to an already experienced roster. The season has gotten off to a hot start for the ‘Canes who are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the MCLA after their first weekend of action.
Miami kicked off the season Friday night against the Duke Blue Devils of the NCLL who made the trek from Durham to South Florida. The ‘Canes got off to a fast start and took a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and a 9-1 lead into halftime. They were led by freshman attackman John Horan (Philadelphia, Pa., William Penn Charter School), whose four goals all came in the first half. After a more balanced second half, Miami went on to win by a final of 16-5.
The Hurricanes controlled the game throughout, starting at the faceoff “X”. Freshman FOS Dan Post-Jacobs (Philadelphia Pa., William Penn Charter School) and sophomore LSM Brett Tracy (West Chester, Pa. Towson Univ.) went a combined 14-for-20 on faceoffs. Tracy, whose 10 groundballs led the team, added a shorthanded goal in the third quarter.
Defensively, Miami was paced by junior goalie Chase Oswald (Stamford, Ct., West Hill) who had 13 saves on the night. A balanced offensive effort saw 10 Hurricanes score goals in the game. Junior attackman Harry McCreary (Summit, N.J., Summit) and senior midfielder Jordan Wendell (Owings Mills, Md., Owings Mills) led the way in the assist column with three apiece.
On Saturday, Miami kicked off the MCLA season with SELC-newcomer FAU. The Hurricanes had won the previous two matchups against their local South Florida rival, but this was the first time they were meeting as MCLA and conference foes. FAU got on the board first early in the game but the Hurricanes reeled off seven straight goals en route to a 10-3 halftime advantage. Miami extended their lead in the third quarter and after a back-and-forth fourth period, the ‘Canes secured their first MCLA victory of the year with a 20-9 win.
The Hurricane offense was led by senior midfielder Matt Gozzi (Guilford, Ct., Xavier) with eight points (4G, 4A) and freshman attackman Jack Bergmann (Detroit, Mich., Detroit Country Day) with six points (4G, 2A). Attackmen John Horan (3G, 1A) and Harry McCreary (1G, 3A) both had impressive performances as well.
LSM Brett Tracy had another outstanding performance. He was 7-for-10 on faceoffs and totaled an astounding 20 groundballs. He excelled on the offensive end of the fielding as well, adding two points (1G, 1A). Senior defenseman Daniel Pyser (Owings Mills, Md., Owings Mills) also got in on the scoring act, adding a goal of his own to go along with five groundballs. The 36 combined goals in this weekend’s games were the most in back-to-back wins for Miami since a pair of non-MCLA wins in 2010. Miami returns to action next weekend against crosstown foe FIU before taking on rival No. 20 Florida State at home on February 21st to kickoff divisional play.
