From FSCMocs.com LAKELAND – Florida Southern scored 14 first half goals here Saturday afternoon en route to earning a 17-6 victory over 14th-ranked Mount Olive in non-conference action at Bryant Stadium. The 17 goals were a season high for the Moccasins, who have scored a combined 30 goals over its last two games. Saturday’s victory improved the Mocs to 2-2 on the season and 10-13 all-time against nationally-ranked opponents in program history. In the win, senior attacker Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md.) scored a career high five goal on five shots, while four other Mocs added two goals to help FSC win its second consecutive game. Sophomore attacker Meghan O’Brien (Rochester, N.Y.) got the scoring started as she scored two goals in the first two-plus minutes of the game to jump out to a 2-0 lead. After UMO’s Claire Wigler dropped the Mocs lead to 2-1 on an unassisted goal with 26:37 left in the opening half, the Mocs would score three straight goals, including back-to-back unassisted goals by Robertson and junior attacker Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.). The third score was by freshman attacker Casey O’Brien (Morris Plains, N.J.). Wigler would stop the Mocs run with two consecutive goals, including the latter goal coming on a free position shot, to drop the Mocs lead to 5-3. FSC, though, would close the first half by scoring nine straight goals to take a 14-3 lead at the half. Robertson scored three of those nine goals, while sophomore midfielder Emily Santoli (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) had two of those goals. The other goals came from Kerge, freshman midfielder Gracie Maganzini (Wolfeboro, N.H.), sophomore attacker Shannon Gilfedder (Longwood, Fla.) and redshirt freshman Shannon Mazza (Kings Park, N.Y.), which was her first goal of the season. With the lead over 10 goals, the game was played with a running clock the entire second half and would extend its lead to 15-3 just 40 seconds into the period on a free position goal by Mazza. Robertson and freshman attacker Dani Bursinger (Powell, Ohio) scored the final two Moccasin goals to push its lead to 17-3 with 15 minutes remaining in the contest. The Trojans, who fell to 6-1 with the loss, would score three late goals, including two more by Wigler, who scored five of UMO’s six goals in the game, to cap the scoring. Junior goalie Taylor Gilis (Bel Air, Md.) was solid in the pipes for the Mocs as she played a little over 53 minutes and allowed just four goals and had five saves. Sophomore Paige Brodbeck (Millersville, Md.) relieved Gillis and allowed two goals and had one save. For the game, the Mocs outshot the Trojans, 29-12, including a 21-6 edge in the first half. Santoli led the way for the Mocs in shots with seven, while Robertson and Kerge each had five. The Mocs picked up 17 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers. UMO won the draw control battle, 14-11. Wigler scored five of UMO’s goals and Riann Daziel had the other goal. Hannah Knight played all 60 minutes in goal for the Trojans and recorded 10 saves, while allowing the 17 goals. The Mocs will return to action on Wednesday, March 9 with a day-night doubleheader at Bryant Stadium as they open the doubleheader with an 11 a.m. game against Indiana (Pa.) and will face Shorter at 7 p.m.
