No. 13 Panthers and No. 9 Spartans Square off in SSC Championship

FIT is playing in its first conference championship game, while Tampa is the defending champ
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (12-3, 4-2 SSC) and Tampa (14-2, 6-0 SSC), the top two seeds in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, will face off in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Naimoli Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
FIT won its semifinal matchup with Rollins College on Friday. The Panthers trailed throughout the first half, heading into halftime down 4-3. Florida Tech opened up the flood gates in the second half. The Panthers outscored the Tars 9-2 in the half, including an 8-0 run through the third and fourth quarters, en route to a 12-6 victory.
Senior Andrew Conley led FIT with four goals on the day and sophomore Ben Abell finished with a career-high three goals. Senior Eric Biller was big in the cage for the Panthers, recording 11 saves in the win.
Tampa defeated Lynn 13-5 in the second semifinal game. The Spartans held a two goal lead through the first three quarters, and outscored the Fighting Knights 6-0 in the fourth to run away with the win.
This is the second meeting in nine days between Florida Tech and Tampa this season. The Spartans came away with a narrow 10-8 victory over the Panthers on Friday, April 17.
It was a back-and-forth matchup between the two teams in their previous contest. The score was tied at two goals apiece at the end of the first quarter and the Spartans took a 5-4 lead into halftime. Tampa increased its lead to 8-5 in the third before FIT went on a 3-1 run to come within one goal with 8:10 remaining in the fourth. The Spartans sealed the victory with 2:27 left on the clock to escape with the win.
Junior Brian Bacarella led the Panthers with three goals and one assist in the game, while senior Zach Wynne and sophomore Charlie Morrisette added one goal and two assists each.
Tampa was led by Sean Giampietro’s three goals in the win. Chris Vetter and Zak Goldbach each finished with two goals.
