HARDEEVILLE, S.C. –– No. 16 Palm Beach Atlantic was unable to withstand a barrage of goals by No. 3 Dayton in the second and third quarters of Sunday’s game, losing 17-7 in the matchup between Top 25 teams. The Sailfish (2-1) and the Flyers (3-0) battled at a neutral site in Savannah, Georgia, the home of the Savannah College of Art & Design. Senior Joey Bauer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Florida State Univ.) led PBA in scoring with two goals and one assist.
Following a Dayton goal to open the scoring, freshman Aaronwyn Austria (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) scored on the extra-man opportunity from Dan Wilkerson (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) at 9:52 to tie the game. It was an emotional moment for the ‘Fish; prior to the game, Aaronwyn received word that his grandfather passed away. The team dedicated the game to Florencio Austria.
Following a goal by sophomore Greg Swanson (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton) and two more by Dayton, it was time for two Sailfish to find each other on back-to-back plays. First, Bauer found Thomas East (Mableton, Ga./Whitefield Academy) for a goal at 2:44; East then found Bauer on a fast break goal to tie the game (4-4) at 0:35.0.
In the second and third quarter, UD outscored PBA 12-1 and held the ‘Fish scoreless for a period of 26:25. In the fourth, Palm Beach Atlantic outscored Dayton, 2-1, on goals from Swanson and Rob Aycock (Greensboro, N.C./Walter Hines Page).
THE FIRST TIME
Sunday afternoon’s meeting between No. 3 Dayton and No. 16 Palm Beach Atlantic marks the first time that the Sailfish and Flyers have ever played each other. PBA will play two other CCLA opponents in the regular season: No. 6 Grove City College and No. 18 Lourdes University. Their only other common opponent is No. 12 SCAD, a division rival.
A TALE OF TWO QUARTERS
The Sailfish have been a case of two teams early on in 2015. In the first and fourth quarters, PBA outscored Dayton 6-5. They’ve outscored teams 25-11 in those quarters all season. In the second and third quarters of 2015, the ‘Fish have been outscored 21-11.
WINNING THE BATTLES, NOT THE GAME
Palm Beach Atlantic was in the positive for several categories on Sunday, including picking up a season-high 49 ground balls. The Sailfish won the turnover battle, registering only 21 compared to Dayton’s 26. PBA also killed both man-down opportunities, while scoring the only man-up goal of the game. Dayton won the faceoff battle, 17-11.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Aaronwyn Austria is the player of the game. Aaronwyn scored the first of seven goals of the Sailfish, in addition to playing a stellar game at the midfield and registering three ground balls. He was 1-for-2 on faceoffs.
UNSUNG HERO OF THE GAME
Sophomore Drake Kessell made seventeen saves in goal for the Sailfish, turning away multiple Dayton Flyers from point blank range. He also registered two ground balls.
PENALTY FREE LIVING
Sunday’s game saw the Sailfish register a season-low 1:30 in penalty time. Freshman Matt Morris (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) received a delay of game penalty in the second quarter, while Anthony Curra (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) was called for slashing at 6:27 of the third quarter.
LET’S GET HEALTHY
Palm Beach Atlantic is off for two weeks and will look to heal up and regain the services of first team All-American Nick Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Jacksonville Univ.), among others, before a game on Saturday, February 21 against Lynn University (7:00 p.m.). This game will be played at the Rinker Athletic Campus in West Palm Beach. Follow the ‘Fish on Twitter for in-game live updates and more (www.twitter.com/pbalacrosse).
