TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 8 University of Tampa men’s lacrosse team squared off with the No. 5 Adelphi University Panthers on Friday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex and came out on top completing the upset over Adelphi by a score of 19-11.
Tampa’s offense was up to the challenge as it faced a youthful, but tough Adelphi side. The Spartans were hard to stop as the Panthers couldn’t key in on any specific player, as eight different Spartans tallied goals.
Fueling the offensive onslaught were a tenacious trio of attackers in Andrew Kew, Conor Whipple and Mike Morris, who combined for 13 of the team’s 19 goals. Kew’s eight-goal performance against AU is a new school record for most by a player in a single game. Whipple would go on to add four assists on the night. Other Spartan goal scorers included Jake Schmidt, Matt Bilak, Riley Piper, Matt Vetter and Luke Posner, who combined for six goals total.
Defensively, UT hauled in 38 groundballs and finished the day with 11 caused turnovers. Leading the charge on defense for the Spartans were Posner and A.J. Ferraro, who teamed up to scoop up 10 ground balls, and forced five caused turnovers in the contest.
Also stepping up for Tampa was faceoff specialist Noah Menendez, who recorded an impressive 13 wins in the faceoff X against John English, who finished the 2015 season as the No. 2-ranked faceoff specialist in the country.
Following the victory, Tampa advances to 2-0 on the season. The Spartans return to action Sunday as they welcome Walsh University to the Naimoli Complex, with the game time set for 1 p.m. Live stats, as well as a web broadcast, will be available for fans to follow the action via TampaSpartans.com.
