WINGATE, N.C. – Saint Leo junior attackman Matt Obermeyer has been named the 2013 Deep South Conference Co-Player of the Year, league officials announced Monday afternoon. Saint Leo goalie Dave Moore joins Obermeyer as DSC Freshman of the Year. Saint Leo was represented by seven players on this year’s teams, and led the way with five first team selections.  The Lions were led by top vote-getter Obermeyer who added First Team All-DSC attack honors to his Co-Player of the Year title, with Chris Caiazza, Sean Connolly, John Laronga, and Moore joining him as First Team selections. Robert Hutchinson earns second team honors, while Paul Aramanda rounds out the list of Lions as an Honorable Mention selection. Saint Leo goalie Dave Moore has been named DSC Freshman of the Year, while Florida Tech’s Ryan McAleavey is the Coach of the Year. Saint Leo and Tampa each had six players earn All-DSC honors. Saint Leo led the way with five first team selections, while Tampa and Lenoir-Rhyne each had five second team honorees. Catawba had four All-DSC selections, including three that earned first team honors. Florida Southern also had four all-conference selections, getting two players on each team. Florida Tech had a first team and second team selection, while Rollins had one first team honoree and Wingate had one second team selection. Obermeyer was the top vote-getter as a first team All-DSC attack. He finished third in the conference with 27 goals and fifth with 32 points. He had 16 goals in conference games, ranking sixth in the DSC with 2.86 points per contest in league games. Griffo was the top vote-getter as a first team midfielder. He led the regular season champion Spartans with 23 goals on the year, adding five assists for a team-best 28 points. Griffo’s 13 goals in league-play ranked seventh in the DSC. Moore earned first team All-DSC honors for the Lions. The freshman piled up a league-best 12.64 saves per game, while ranking third with a .602 save percentage. He held opponents to 8.95 goals per contest. He was at his best in league games, registering 13.71 saves per game to go along with a .600 save percentage. McAleavey led Florida Tech to a 5-8 overall record in just the second season of lacrosse for the Panthers. Florida Tech registered a pair of DSC wins, which included a 16-15 victory over a Saint Leo team that finished 5-2 in the conference. The Panthers also notched a 9-5 DSC victory over Rollins, while collecting non-conference wins over Coker, Belmont Abbey and MIT. Joining Obermeyer as a first team selection at the attack position is Catawba’s John Scheich. He led the league with 41 goals and 3.42 goals per contest. He added 18 assists on the year for a DSC-best 59 points and 4.92 points per game. Saint Leo’s Chris Caiazza rounded out the first team attack, ranking fifth in the conference with 2.27 goals per game and seventh with 2.82 points per contest. Griffo was the top vote-getter among the midfielders. Florida Tech’s Andrew Conley joined Griffo on the first team. He finished second in the conference with 33 goals and 2.54 goals per game, while finishing third with 3.46 points per contest. Catawba’s Tom Cullop rounded out the first team midfield. He ranked fourth in the DSC with 1.42 assists per game, adding 14 goals to tally 31 points on the year. Saint Leo’s Sean Connolly earned first team honors as a long-stick midfielder. He collected 27 ground balls on the year for the Lions, who held opponents to 9.24 goals per game. Florida Southern’s DJ Lubs leads the first team defense. He piled up 39 ground balls on the season, while registering 21 caused turnovers for a Florida Southern defense that ranked second in the DSC, allowing 9.38 goals per game. Catawba’s Drew Stoltz also earned first team honors. He collected 29 ground balls for the Indians, causing 12 turnovers. Nick Scannapieco of Rollins rounds out the first team defense. He anchored a Rollins defense that held DSC opponents to 9.43 goals per game while collecting 26 ground balls and causing 17 turnovers. Florida Southern’s Dan Krispinsky leads the way as a first team specialist. He won 164-of-254 face-offs on the year, good for a .646 winning percentage. He added a goal and an assist on the year, while leading the league with 77 ground balls. Saint Leo’s John Laronga is also a first team specialist. He won 95-of-142 face-offs on the year, good for a .669 winning percentage. He also piled up a league-best 7.14 ground balls per game. Leading the way on the second team attack is Wingate’s Derek Watts. He scored 19 goals on the year, while ranking second in the league with 24 assists and fourth in the DSC with 3.07 points per game. Dane Sorensen of Florida Southern is also a second team selection. He ranked seventh in the league with 25 goals, adding 10 assists to rank ninth in the DSC with 2.69 points per contest. Tampa’s Joe McMahan rounds out the second team attack. He finished sixth in the conference with 1.30 assists per game, adding 14 goals to rank eighth in the DSC with 2.70 points per game. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Tyler Kotch leads the second team midfield. Kotch netted 27 goals on the year, ranking sixth in the league with 1.93 goals per game. Robert Hutchinson of Saint Leo earns second team honors, ranking seventh in the conference with 1.27 assists per game, adding five goals on the year. Sam Ashton of Lenoir-Rhyne led the league with 31 assists and 2.21 assists per contest, while adding 19 goals to finish second in the conference with 3.57 points per set. Kevin Naslonski of Florida Southern also earns second team honors. He netted 22 goals on the year, adding eight assists to rank second on the team with 30 points. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Imari Davis rounds out the second team midfield. He piled up 19 goals and 13 assists on the season, registering 32 points for the Bears. Amo Olivier of Lenoir-Rhyne leads the second team long-stick midfield. He collected 49 ground balls on the season, causing 17 turnovers while scoring a pair of goals. Tampa’s Jasper Gantick joins Olivier on the second team. He compiled 19 ground balls on the year, causing five turnovers. Tampa’s Eric Dance and Larry Gress lead the second team defense. The duo led the league’s stingiest defense, which held DSC opponents to 7.24 goals per game. The Spartans caused a league-high 9.86 turnovers per contest in league games. Dance registered 32 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers on the year, while Gress had 29 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Stephen O’Hara also earned second team honors. He collected 25 ground balls on the season, causing 10 turnovers for the Bears. Dan Rew of Catawba leads the second team specialists. He won 104-of-172 face-offs on the season, good for a win percentage of .605. He added four goals and two assists, while ranking third in the DSC with 5.33 ground balls per game. Tampa’s Trevor Calleja also earns second team specialist honors. He won 112-of-190 face-offs on the year, good for a win percentage of .589. Calleja added a goal, two assists and 65 ground balls. Florida Tech’s Eric Biller is the second team goalie. He finished second in the league with 12.15 saves per game, piling up a league-best 158 saves.
