COLUMBUS, Ohio – The goals came early and often from the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday despite the best efforts of Pete DeLuca. OSU led, 9-0, at the half and increased its lead to 12-0 in the third quarter as the Buckeyes (3-6) scored a 13-2 win over the Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team. DeLuca made 16 saves in the contest for the Dolphins (1-7), while Chase McIntyreand Tom Moore netted the two JU goals.
Taking control early on a rainy day with temperatures that never reached the 40s, Ohio State outshot Jacksonville, 15-2, in the opening 15 minutes and had a 6-0 lead by the end of the quarter. Leading goal-scorer Jesse King netted a hat trick in the first quarter and the Buckeyes took advantage of Jacksonville miscues, scoring a pair of man-up goals.
The lead was extended to 9-0 in the second quarter with Gordie Koerber scoring twice for OSU. DeLuca made 13 saves in the first half alone, but with the Buckeyes uncorking 32 shots, the Dolphins couldn’t keep up.
Jacksonville got on the board late in the third quarter with the Dolphins taking advantage of an Ohio State penalty. Moore scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season on a pass from Quint Miller, who supplied his first assist. The Dolphins scored a second consecutive goal in the fourth quarter to make it a 12-2 game, with McIntyre taking a feed from Moore and depositing his ninth goal of the campaign.
In addition to his 16 saves, DeLuca added nine ground balls. Tyler Black had four ground balls to move within three of second place on the all-time JU charts behind Dan McNulty.
Jacksonville will need to brush off Saturday’s tough defeat as the Dolphins re-enter conference play beginning next weekend. The Dolphins host VMI on April 5 at 1 p.m., the first of four Atlantic Sun games leading up to the A-Sun Tournament in early May.
