Playoff Preview – Benjamin Hosts Boca Raton!

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
In the toughest region in the state this season it comes down to this.  Two teams, one spot. Two teams, having already met one time this year.  Advantage Benjamin. Doesn’t really matter now though. Two teams, one spot. In Bradenton. Benjamin got past this round last year, Boca is in virgin territory. Doesn’t really matter right now though. Two coaches, one in his second year here as a head coach, one in his first year here as a head coach. All-Americans on each team. Expect a raucous crowd at The Benjamin School tomorrow night.  7:00pm. Tickets cost less than the senior price at Muvico. So many match-ups.  So much strategy to contemplate.   Boca Mauro   Benjamin is ranked #4 in the latest FLN Media Poll and Boca Raton is #8.  Each holds a Top 10 win during the playoff season.  Boca had the tougher district and Benjamin had the tougher playoff bracket. Benjamin comes in with a 9-game winning streak, EIGHT of them road games, including the win over Boca on April 8th.  Boca comes in having won 10 of 11 to finish 17-3. Benjamin has wins over St. Thomas Aquinas, Jupiter twice, Boca, Jensen Beach and Melbourne Central Catholic.  Boca has wins over Ponte Vedra, Saint Andrew’s twice, St. Thomas Aquinas, Columbus Catholic, Jensen Beach and Pope John Paul. These two teams have two of the best resumes the state has seen this year. In the first game Benjamin was able to exploit the Boca defense with their quickness.  Can they do it again? Boca’s offense lost their patience as they tried to come back.  Plenty of good looks went wanting due to small mistakes, the kind that cost you games.  Can they turn that around? Collin Pepper has replaced Matt Digney in goal for Boca.  Will he rise to the occasion? Benjamin’s offense struggled some against Jensen Beach.  Will Boca learn something from that game? Packer and Rodormer Johnston and McCabe Cicio and Giarratana O’Connor and Clinton And on and on.  So many potential difference makers . . . which ones step up?
Both teams have plenty of experience AND key youth.  Not many can say that. Benjamin has the home field advantage but both teams play on turf so there will be no surprises there.  Will the weather hold up?  Does rain favor one or the other?  Probably not. I think the game revolves around two things.  Does Boca have a better answer for how Benjamin was able to get inside the defense for middle range looks in the area about 5 yards out or can Benjamin exploit that again?  And on offense, can Boca play a 48-minute game on offense patiently?  Can either defense take away the top players on each other’s attack and midfield?  Will either be able to come up with a new wrinkle at this point? Whichever team answers those questions will likely win the game.  And if neither does, which individual star steps up late in the game to make the one key play that sends them to Bradenton? I wouldn’t be surprised if we need an extra quarter or two either. Two teams, one spot. Can’t wait. My prediction?  Someone will step up and win the game in overtime . . . That’s the most I’ll do on this one.
