Pope John Paul jumped out early and often, taking a 12-3 lead into halftime and cruised to a 19-8 victory over Miami Country Day last night in Boca Raton. Mount St. Mary’s commit Mikey Urso led PJP with 4 goals and 5 assists, leading a group of five players that totaled hat tricks. Junior Jake Boyer, sophomores Troy Fischer and John McTurk and freshman Chris Castellon also posted hat tricks for PJP. Miami Country Day was led by Jordan Karp with 3 goals and Jared Robins added 2 goals and 2 assists.
PJP jumped out early, dominating all facets of the game in the first half. MCD struggled with clearing and ball possession while PJP goalie Niko Morfogen started a number of fast breaks with precise clearing passes. MCD took some penalties for rough play that gave PJP plenty of man-up time and PJP converted on them.
The second half was mostly played under running time and MCD did have a strong fourth quarter as they were able to control more face-offs that led to fast break opportunities that they converted on. But by that point the die had been cast.
PJP returns to action on Thursday when they host Palm Beach Gardens and MCD travels to Belen Jesuit the same day.
