Prep School Student-Athlete Introduces Lacrosse to Inner City Youth

Jordan Karp, 16-year-old rising senior at Miami Country day school, will be leading a unique program to introduce the sport of lacrosse to under-privileged, at-risk inner city youths being tutored on the campus of Miami Country Day School. The program starts June 17th and is in collaboration with Breakthrough Miami, a nonprofit organization that provides disadvantaged students with the tools they need to reach their goals. Jordan will provide his lacrosse expertise to expose the students of Breakthrough Miami to lacrosse: how the sport is played, its rules, and the team-building skills that will help the children not just in the sport but in life.  Jordan was able to secure revolutionary lacrosse equipment from major manufacturers who will donate beginner equipment.  Reaching out to the community for exposure and publicity, Jordan is organizing this unique event with great excitement.  He hopes that it will inspire similar programs for other sports to include underprivileged children all around the nation as well as promote the expansion of lacrosse and encourage kids to play the game. Breakthrough Miami is a tuition-free academic enrichment program that provides motivated middle-school students from underserved communities with the tools they need to achieve their most ambitious goals in life.  It was recognized for its excellence by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, with a grant of $3.25 million to expand and serve more students and families in need.  Today, Breakthrough Miami serves more than 1,000 students from across Miami-Dade County on sites located at five independent schools and one public charter school.  The program has become an eight-year program, guiding students from the 5th grade through high school graduation.  Lacrosse will be offered as a part of the program from June 17th to July 26th. Jordan’s introduction to lacrosse began when he first picked up a stick in the 6th grade and it has since become his life’s passion, followed closely by academics.  This season as a junior attackman, Karp was honored as the leading scorer on the Miami Country Day Varsity Lacrosse team; he will return to school as a Captain of the team next year. He was named by The Miami Herald as an All-Dade Lacrosse Player.  Riding this momentum, Jordan was recently selected and is playing for both Team Miami and the Elite Team Florida, which represents the State in two national tournaments:  one held in Princeton, NJ and the most prestigious tournament, Hotbeds at the University of Delaware. Florida Lacrosse News recently mentioned Jordan Karp “as someone to keep an eye on” from his performance at the Team Florida All-Star Competition.
