PV’s Eric Applegate Scores Two in Big Win for JU Dolphins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Evan Tyler scored a goal with 4:05 to play to give Jacksonville University a 17-16 season opening win over Vermont at D.B. Milne Field here Saturday.
Tyler, a midfielder from Richmond, Va., connected on a sprawling shot on a pass from Doran Graham to put the Dolphins (1-0) ahead 17-15 on his third goal of the game.
Vermont’s Ian MacKay scored for Vermont (0-1) with 1:01 to play to pull within one and the Dolphins, who controlled the final quarter, picked up the win which broke a six-game losing streak going back to last season.
”It was a character win,” JU coach Guy Van Arsdale said. “It was a gumption win and it was grind it out.”
The Catamounts got off to a 4-3 first quarter lead and neither team was able to gain a distinct advantage throughout. The score was tied at nine at the half and Vermont got the biggest lead of the game at 13-10 with 3:36 to play in the third quarter.
From there, the Dolphins put on a furious rally outscoring Vermont 7-3 through the end of the game.
Tyler had a pair of goals in the spurt as did class mate Eric Applegate. Senior Jet Harding, Ray Bannister and Graham, who ended the game with two goals and an assist, each contributed to the final effort.
Shawn Ewert had a hat trick, Jet Harding two goals and Dakota Rohlin, Cody Ford, Fernando Milanes and Chase York also contributed goal for JU.
Dolphin goalie Ben Gleichenhaus recorded 19 saves as Vermont got off 56 shots during the game to 38 for JU.
McKay led Vermont with four goals and two assists.
“We did some dumb stuff,” Van Arsdale said, “but we found ways to overcome that. I am very proud of them.”
The Dolphins return to action Feb. 14 in the sixth annual Moe’s Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic against Monmouth at 6 p.m.
