Rollins Improves to 2-0 With Win at Shorter

(February 6, 2015) – Playing their second game in as many days, the Tars defeated Shorter on the road, 9-5, on Friday afternoon. Rollins improves to a perfect 2-0, tying for the best start in the program’s history, a mark that was set last season, while Shorter falls to 0-1. The Tars outshot Shorter 40-27 for the game and collected 38 ground balls compared to Shorter’s 24. Nicholas Schultz led all scorers with three goals, his first scores of the young season, while Morgan Baker chipped in two goals to go along with an assist. Adam Stefanowicz finished with a pair of assists. Four other Tars finished with a goal each in the victory. Junior Alex Petsos finished 11-18 in face offs and tied Stefanowicz for the team high with five ground balls. In goal, Thomas Troiano improved to 2-0, finishing with five saves. Rollins jumped out to an early lead in the first after goals by Schultz and Chris Ross, giving the Tars a 2-0 lead with 6:54 left in the quarter. Ross’ score was his third of the year after scoring two in the opener on Thursday. Shorter would cut the lead in half later in the first before coming back to tie it at 2-2 early in the second. Rollins would then fire back with three unanswered scores to take a commanding 5-2 lead heading into the half. The Tars outshot the Hawks 13-4 in the second quarter. Shorter’s Travis Getz accounted for the lone score in the third before Baker and Schultz opened the fourth with a pair of scores to give Rollins their biggest lead of the day at 7-3 with 9:42 left. The Hawks answered with two scores to cut the Tars lead back to two at 7-5 before goals by Baker and sophomore Carson Buell slammed the door, pushing Rollins to a perfect 2-0. The Tars will now take two weeks off before traveling to Limestone on February 20.
