The Rollins men’s program has been on suspension during an investigation. The investigation is complete and Rollins issued the following statement.
September 24, 2015 Dear Rollins Community, I know that you have been concerned about the recent allegations of misconduct by members of the Men’s Lacrosse program. I write to bring you up to date on where matters stand. As you are aware, the Men’s Lacrosse team was temporarily suspended while the College conducted an investigation of student conduct and recruiting. During the temporary suspension, all team privileges were revoked. We have concluded our investigation and the suspension has been lifted. The investigation was conducted by Campus Safety in collaboration with the Dean of Students office and department of Athletics. The team was found responsible for hazing and has been issued the following sanctions: 1. The Men’s Lacrosse team, while no longer suspended, is on community probation until the end of the spring 2016 semester. While the team may continue to practice for the remainder of the fall 2015 semester, it will not participate in competition until spring 2016. Moving forward, any member of the team found in violation of College policy will be subject to disciplinary action through Community Standards & Responsibility, up to and including dismissal from the College and/or dismissal from the team. 2. The team will participate in the mandatory myPlaybook online education program offered through Athletics. This is an educational resource developed by Prevention Strategies to prevent alcohol and drug-related harm among student athletes. 3. The team will participate in small group sessions, coordinated by the Wellness Center, to address issues of character development and responsibility. In addition to the sanctions issued to the team, some team members have been found responsible for individual alcohol violations and have gone through the Community Standards and Responsibility process. We know that the campus community has been concerned about this misconduct, and, more specifically, hazing and its effect on students. The College takes all reports of hazing seriously, and behavior of this kind from any individual or organization will not be tolerated. The College abides by Florida state laws regarding hazing, and our policy can be found here: rollins.edu/community-standards-responsibility/. Additional resources about hazing can be found at ncaa.org, fipg.org, and hazingprevention.org. Rollins is deeply committed to the health and safety of all students, and we are working with the Men’s Lacrosse team to develop greater individual awareness and to encourage the development of an ethic of responsibility as members of their team and our community. If you have further questions, please contact me at 407.646.2345 or Pennie Parker, Rollins’ Athletic Director, at 407.646.2636. Sincerely, Meghan Harte Weyant, Ph.D. Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
