Rollins Takes OT Thriller Over Lynn 12-11 – Both Press Releases

photo via Rollins web site   Lynn Press Release   BOCA RATON, Fla. – Trailing 10-6 with under 10 minutes to play at home on Saturday, the Lynn University lacrosse team utilized a 5-1 tear – including Johnny Gavin‘s game-tying strike with 22 seconds left – to close out regulation and force overtime against Rollins College. The Fighting Knights had a late man-up opportunity but were unable to convert before the Tars buried the game winner for a 12-11 Sunshine State Conference victory. STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Gavin had Lynn’s first and last goals of the day, opening up the scoring immediately off the first draw six seconds into the game. He finished with a hat trick on five shots, along with three groundballs.
  • Austin Jerhoff also tallied three goals and three groundballs.
  • Nick Howard, Stephen Polsinelli and Brian Kiel all recorded one-goal, one-assist games with Conrad Rhein and Greg Morissette rounding out the Fighting Knights’ goals scorers.
  • Mikey Urso and Peter Masters each slotted an assist while faceoff specialist Dryden Brous picked up the first multi-point game of his career with two helpers.
  • Along with his offensive contributions, Brous shined at the X, winning 14-of-20 faceoffs while recording a game-high and career-high-tying nine groundballs.
  • Starting defenders John Flanary and Cody Bartusiak each recorded two caused turnovers.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Three of Lynn’s six losses this year have been by one goal. 
  • Four of the last five games for Lynn have been decided by one goal.
  • Urso now has 18 assists on the year, tying Gavin’s single-season record from 2015.
  • Lynn won the faceoff battle for the ninth time this season (17-10).
  • Brous won seven of his eight faceoff attempts in the fourth quarter.
  • Lynn’s first and last goals of the game were nearly identical, with Brous picking the draw clean, streaking through the middle and finding Gavin outside on the corner for a rip.

UP NEXT: The Blue and White have their final home game of the season next Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day against the Saint Leo Lions.   =====   Rollins Press Release   Boca Raton, Fla.  (April 8, 2017) – The Rollins men’s lacrosse team found itself tied at the end of regulation for the second time this season, but persevered and prevailed in extra time for the second time this year, earning the 12-11 win over Lynn University on Saturday evening at Bobby Campbell Stadium. The key conference victory moves the Tars to a record of 7-5 and 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play, while the Fighting Knights drop to a mark of 4-6 and 0-3 against SSC opponents. The Tars led by as much as two with 2:11 to play in regulation, but two quick goals by Lynn within seven seconds of each other knotted the score at 11-11 and sent the showdown into overtime. Rollins was led in goals by Justin Diamond and Greg Taicher, who netted four apiece, including Diamond’s game-winner in overtime.  Taicher led the team in overall points with six as he tacked on two assists.  Connor Ashton, Carson Buell, Blake Buell, and Tommy Keane each notched one goal on the evening.  Ashton led the team in assists with three, while C. Buell and Dylan Bassham dished out one each as seven of the Tars’ 12 goals were assisted.  Midfield standout Lucas Brush led the team in ground balls with five, followed closely by C. Buell and B. Buell with four each.  Evan Schimek, Brush, and Zach Gerry each caused a team high one turnover on the evening.  At the faceoff-x, Trey LaPorta won 8-of22 attempts, while Brett Portera won 1-of-4.  The ultimate win for the Tars on the faceoff was in overtime, where Andrew Matthews ultimately won possession, which gave the Tars the go-ahead to find the back of the net with 27 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.  In goal, Ty Wedekind earned his second straight win, making 14 saves on the night as he played a full game, including a key save in overtime, while allowing 11 goals on the day. Lynn was led by Austin Jerhoff and Johhny Gavin with three goals each, including Gavin’s game-tying goal with 22 seconds left in regulation.  Brien Kiel, Conrad Rhein, Greg Morissette, Stephen Polsinelli, and Nick Howard tallied one goal each.  Dryden Brous led the team with two assists, while Kiel, Peter Masters, Polsinelli, Howeard, and Mikey Urso each dished out one on the day.  Brous led the game in ground balls with nine as he won 14-of-20 faceoff attempts.  Defensively, the Fighting Knights saw a team high two caused turnovers from John Flanary and Cody Bartusiak.  In goal, Collin McClelland played a full game, making three saves while allowing 12 goals. HIGHLIGHTS AND QUARTER-BY-QUARTER ANALYSIS First Quarter l Lynn was the first on the board just six seconds in thanks to a goal by Galvin off of an assist by Brous.  But three straight goals from the Tars gave Rollins the 3-1 lead with 5:28 to play in the opening quarter.  The Fighting Knights fought hard and pulled to within one, 3-2, with 4:21 on the clock, closing out the scoring in the first quarter of action. Second Quarter l  The second stanza opened up with Lynn evening the score at 3-3 thanks to a goal by Jerhoff off of an assist by Urso with 9:51 on the clock, followed by Lynn taking 4-3 lead with 7:49 on the clock in the second quarter with a second-straight goal by Jerhoff.  Taicher evened the tally at the 6:01 mark with  goal assisted by Ashton, and Ashton once again made the magic happen as he dished out an assist to Diamond for the Tars’ fifth goal of the game.  At the half, Rollins held onto a 5-4 lead over the Fighting Knights. Third Quarter l Lynn came out of the break and scored to even the score at 5-5 with 10:16 on the clock, but Taicher answered back with an unassisted goal to pull Rollins back into the lead, 6-5, with 7:45 to go in the period.  Morissette set the score at 6-6 with 5:01 on the board, but two straight goals by Taicher gave Rollins an 8-6 lead entering into the final period. Fourth Quarter l The Tars opened up the fourth quarter with two consecutive goals, leading by as much as four with 10:29 to play, 10-6.  But the Fighting Knights were not about to back down and scored two straight to pull back to within two, 10-8, with 6:49 to go.  Bassham connected a feed to Keane at the 3:50 mark to give Rollins an 11-8 lead, but an unassisted goal by Jerhoff pulled the Fighting Knights back to within two, 11-9. With 2:11 to play.  As the clock ticked down, Rhein placed a ball between the pipes off of an assist by Polsinelli with 29 seconds to go.  Despite the Tars’ best defensive efforts, Brous won the ensuing faceoff and fed a pass to Gavin for the game-tying goal just six seconds later, sending the contest into extra time. Overtime | Rollins’ Andrew Matthews won the opening faceoff in extra time, allowing the Tars to rattle off three shots before being called for a penalty.  Lynn tried to used the man-up opportunity to their advantage, but a key save by Wedekind held the Fighting Knights at bay and put the ball back into the Tars’ possession.  On the clear, Lynn was called for a holding penalty, ensuring the Tars would ride out the remainder of their penalty at even strength before going man-up to close out the contest.  Rollins capitalized on their man-up advantage, and sealed the deal with a goal by Diamond off of a C. Buell assist with 27 remaining in overtime. GAME NOTES
  • Wedekind earned his first second of the season, and earned a career high in saves with 14 on the day.
  • Rollins now leads the program series against Lynn, 3-1.
  • The Tars are now 2-0 when they enter into extra time this season – the last time Rollins triumphed in an overtime game was back on February 26th when they defeated UIndy, 9-8, with a goal by Diamond with one minute remaining in overtime.
  • Diamond has scored the Tars’ game-winning goal in both of their overtime games this season.
  • Rollins is now 4-1 when playing true away contests.
