Rollins Women: #6 Tars Unable to Cage #5 Lindenwood

via press release – photo via Rollins web site   WINTER PARK, Fla.  (February 19, 2017) – After being knotted with the No. 5 Lindenwood University Lions at the half with a score at 7-7, the sixth-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team was unable to cage the Lions in the second half, falling by a final score of 16-8 at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field on Sunday afternoon.  The loss drops the Tars to 1-1 on the young season, while the Lions advance to 2-0. Rollins saw seven different players notch goals on the afternoon, led by freshman middie Hannah Ashton with two.  Kallie German, Brittany Eveler, Maggie Dougherty, Paige Brock, Lily Rizk, and Julianna DeSimone each tallied one goal on the day.  German added the Tars’ lone assist on the afternoon to earn two points on the day. In goal for the Tars, Malorie Olin saw a total of 48:16 minutes between the pipes, earning 12 saves while allowing 10 goals.  Freshman Sarah Neely stepped in for 11:44 minutes between Olin’s outing, allowing six goals while earning two saves. The Lions were led in goals by Maria Johnson with four goals on the day, followed by Allison Hurley and Sophie Buelow with a hat trick apiece.  Rachel Benzing added two goals of her own while Sarah Goetz, Morgan Judd, Carly Fedorowski, and Hannah Doughty added one goal each.  Dishing out assists were Buelow, Benzing, and Judd with two each, while Johnson added one of her own. In goal, Rachel Ortell played a full 60 minutes, earning 12 saves while allowing only eight goals on the day. HIGHLIGHTS AND HALF ANALYSIS First Half l Lindenwood tallied the first goal of the game on a free position shot by Fedorowski with 28:49 on the clock, but Rollins answered back with two straight to take a 2-1 lead with 25:43 to play in the first half.  The Lions retaliated with two straight to pull back to a one goal lead, 3-2, with 20:01 on the clock, but three straight by the Tars set the score at 5-3 with 6:39 to go in the first half.  The Lions notched the next two, tying things up at 5-5 with 3:57 to go, but Rollins answered back with two of their own to pull ahead to a 7-5 lead with 1:44 to play in the period.  Despite the Tars’ best defensive efforts, the Lions netted two quick goals in 63 seconds to close out the first stanza tied at 7-7. Second Half l Lindenwood opened up the second half with six straight goals to pull out to a 12-7 lead and never looked back.  Rollins broke the run with a goal by Rizk with 17:07 to play, but the Lions closed out the game with three more to set the final score at 16-8 with 3:17 on the clock thanks to an assist by NeCamp, setting the score at 8-7 at the break.   • Sunday’s showdown marked the fourth time the two teams have met in competition.  The overall series is now tied at 2-2.
  • The last time the Lions earned a win over the Tars was back on April 2, 2014, when then-ranked No. 10 Lindenwood defeated then No. 11 Rollins, 19-11.
  • The series has been a back-and-forth saga, with Rollins winning the first outing 13-12 on April 13, 2013.  After that, Lindenwood claimed a 19-11 win over Rollins on April 2, 2014, but the Tars bounced back and took the next game in the program series, 12-11, last season on March 29. 2016.
  • Dennis Short has accumulated a record of 104-42 in his nine years with the Tars, and holds onto a career record of 125-88 in his 13 years as a head coach.
